R. I. P. Neil Innes of The Rutles - the cult Beatles parody collaboration by Monty Python and the original cast of SNL. I saw him perform at the Port Washington Public Library about eight years ago and he was fantastic. It was a whimsical mix of talk and solo acoustic music, and I remember that he closed it out with a section about the meaning of life, which he ultimately said was “to have fun”—a broad, but if you think about it, rather wise credo.

Today’s #autographedalbumaugust entry: What if the original cast of Saturday Night Live and Monty Python teamed up to make a parody of The Beatles? Sounds awesome, right? Well, it happened and it was kinda hit or miss, but regardless, “The Rutles: All You Need is Cash” is a fascinating show to watch. And it had its own OTT soundtrack of clever bordering on mean Beatles pastiches, too. The musician behind that, Neil Innes, is a thoughtful, intelligent and very funny guy in his own right, and I caught him doing a one-man show at a library a few years ago—a warmup for a quick American nightclub tour. So I brought this along and he kindly signed it.
