gratitude, dude (day 1/7)

i am grateful for the joys of sam's club, an infinite jungle of all the material delights, and the 1$ hot dog combo. i am grateful for lazy saturday afternoons spent watching youtube (thanks Doctor Mike). i am grateful for my childhood dog, Comet, who is the most well-behaved and loving animal on earth. i am grateful for frozen meatballs, which are delicious and satisfy my constant craving for a meatball sub. and i am grateful to my wonderful mom, who is always there to provide for me when i need her (thanks for the free tank of gas, you're a G). alright, that's been at least 5 minutes of gratitude, can't wait for 5 more tomorrow (im so healthy) !!

week 4 - overcoming biases

Really enjoyed learning this week.  Love the intentional strategies. 

get over getting used to stuff <--> hedonic adaptation 

1) don’t invest in awesome stuff (houses/expensive cars/etc.). they stick around and we get bored with them.  invest in experiences (vacations/spending time at art galleries/going to concerts/going out for dessert).  EXPERIENCES CAN MAKE US HAPPIER THAN STUFF.

2) thwart your adaptation: savoring (the act of stepping outside of an experience to review and appreciate it), negative visualization (breaks you out of the here and now), make this day your last, gratitude

**I like this suggestion by Lyubomirsky et al. (2006), replay happy memories in your mind for 8 minutes/day for three days per week.  think of the event as though you were rewinding a videotape and playing it back. **

3) reset your reference point - concretely re-experience, concretely observe, avoid social comparisons, interrupt your consumption, increase your variety

**the stop technique - if you notice you’re having ruminating thoughts you take a moment to aloud say “stop”
