There was a clatter from behind one of the bookshelves, and a small blonde head peeked out from a gap in the books. Whether Brand saw him or not, the elfling watched as the king of Dale placed a plate of cake on one of the tables. He was playing with the many wooden horses that the king of Rohan had sent for his name day a few days ago, and he found that the library was the best place to play in because nobody bothered him.
But the cake was enough to lure him out of his hiding place, and he scurried over to the plate, clapping his hands as he dipped a finger in the frosting. He raised his head -- way, way up -- and smiled, remembering his manners.
