#14.13#john and dean#this is crazy to me#thesis.#the implications of 'normal' especially in the context to 'peaceful' which insinuate retiring from hunting#and yet dean has formed his own identity based upon a john who continued from one hunt to the next (within his pursuit of yellow eyes) whic#consumed sam&deans childhood and ultimately ended with john dying upon the culmination of catching up to yellow eyes thus rendering#living the life until it kills you as the ideal for dean (which he has directly stated and taken up as a mantra)#dean disregards the normal the peaceful and states 'i have a family' but who is truly a part of this family?#as considered in this episode deans ideal family is john mary sam and himself (as seen when they have a family dinner and deans#excitement to have john back) so this construction of family is either the ghost of the original nuclear family (with their roles firmly#established) or it is an ever shifting module of roles included and excluded depending on how those within it are performing or are#perceived in relation to dean as their patriarch (such as cas jack kevin charlie)#i personally see this statement not as acknowledging newer members of the family but as dean firmly entrenching himself in the original#nuclear family 'i have a family- it is you mary and sam' which coincides with his refusal to leave hunting (and he acknowledges this to sam#later in the episode when they are cleaning their dishes and he says 'im good with who i am. im good with who you are. and maybe im#just too damn old to want to change that' and that this identity formed is where he wants to stay (and keep sam with him)
