I’ve heard the “wish I had a bag of holding” point and click line too many times. I think that NPC Chosen AU Grendel would give Tav his bag of holding. That’s where he’s got his Netherstone and like. A dozen assorted corpse parts. Maybe part of Dribbles the Clown.

Ketheric was his favourite guy once he died Grendel’s commitment to the Absolute bit got thrown out the window. He doesn’t really care if Gort’s scheme goes through or if he’s going to have to keep doing murder the old-fashioned way. If Tav is murderhobo’ing it up in Baldur’s Gate who is he to not encourage that.

His bag of holding can be either looted from his corpse if the player decides to fight him for the stone or, idk, if the player allies with him and does enough murder he’ll eventually show up and hand the thing over like “you look like you need this more than me. The stone is in there somewhere I think :)”.

And afterwards the player has a bag of holding and stops getting that fucking point and click line

Maybe. Instead of immediately starting to heal his arm back after Raphael lets him take it back from the House of Hope, Grendel just… keeps it in his camp chest. Fuck do you expect me to do with this. Thanks, I guess? And he brings it with him through the journey kind of no idea 1. what his arm is doing in a different place from the rest of him 2. what anybody wants him to be doing about it until he starts figuring out the timeline of Orin’s betrayal and their fight and Kressa’s involvement and yeah sure he gets his first question answered. But he still has no idea what the hell he should be doing with his own arm that is no longer attached to the him. Until he realises that the murder tribunal is asking for victims’ hands. And somewhere in his twice-lobotomised worm-addled brain he realises that he can be the funniest Bhaalspawn in Baldur’s Gate.

I’m sure there’s a justification in game for why the murder tribunal is demanding hands but in my head, in my mental Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s a Grendel v Orin thing :] he was the model… the full-blooded Bhaalspawn the first True Soul and any Unholy Assassin aspirant has to mimic the way he was taken down… he was the perfect Bhaalspawn and he haunts the Temple of Bhaal in his absence and he’ll haunt it until he gets put in the ground for good

I’m pretty passionate about him being a warlock of some kind. Of course that’s assuming that the Danes turn away from God instead of already having been pagans in which case I’d go with hexblade warlock. These are all of course leaning into the suggestion that he’s some kind of magic user at least that his sword could be special. Leaning less hard into that, maybe a rune knight fighter or a battle master fighter.

Oath of Glory Oathbreaker paladin Beowulf…. hear me out. Or maybe oath of the crown oathbreaker. No matter what he’s doing he’s doing something wrong…. Either he breaks his oath of glory by chronically going on his own when he has companions or he breaks an oath of the crown by chronically fucking off to fight monsters who knows where instead of being a good member of Hygelac’s court. Rather important character bits I find that people miss. But to fit with the coast-guard’s statement that he determines that Beowulf and his guys aren’t exiles, perchance Oath of Redemption paladin…. I think oath redemption suits him best considering positive points of his characterisation. I think redemption paladin best marries the reading of him as a positive example with his failures to follow in positive examples. The oathbreaker ones more highlight his failures to follow the poem’s other positive examples and kind of go into the tone of him as doomed all the time, in a way that I wouldn’t do simultaneously with the Gender Stuff in my head mostly because “oathbreaker” gets double loaded with negative meaning in the setting and I’d rather fully commit to his failures than try to balance the other stuff in there.

If he was a companion I think the narrator would speak for him often… and a healthy percentage of his lines would just be noises. Now he would be like the Dark Urge as a companion… but I think it makes more sense for companion AU Grendel to work with the hagspawn idea. Just cobble together all the story bits I’ve moved away from. Oath of Vengeance hagspawn paladin… this could have legs…
