The shop was relatively empty, which shocked Furia because it had some of the most comfortable seating in the city. The leather arm chair was big enough that she could curl up and comfy enough that it felt like a big hug. Plus the coffee was on point and the dessert selection impressive. Their fruit strudels, today was peach, were to die for.

Her gaze moved from the blank wall in the alley across the street to the notebook in her hands. The doodle had taken a turn on her, but she was liking the design if the words haunted her: “I don’t feel real anymore.”

The boss was oblivious to comings and goings of other customers, nor did she try to hide or disguise her art.

Aw hell, someone was already there. Smelling paint in the air, he froze where he stood. The part of his brain that was not consumed by fear clicked through all the possibilities for what the smell of paint lingering heavy in the air could mean and came up with nothing good.

“He-Hey, who’s in here?” He called into the dark. “I know somebody’s here…” His hands were shaking ever so slightly as he drew a knife from his sweatshirt and began to creep through the darkened rows of pews.

Furia didn’t answer. She didn’t know who he was, and this wasn’t his church. At least as far as she knew.

She kept herself still in the shadows, knowing it was unlikely that he could find her in the alcove she chose. The voice sounded vaguely familiar, but she didn’t know it outright. The hesitation in the voice made her cautious. She wasn’t sure if it was fear, or something else that made the person stammer.

“You said you weren’t coming back till tomorrow?” She said from her position sat on the counter. She crossed her legs while she dipped her spoon back into the bowl of cereal she was holding.

Am looked up from her position on the floor. The guy’s switch blade had caught her and ruined her shirt, but she was mostly okay. The guy on the other hand was lying dead on the floor next to her, a bullet embedded in his skull.

“I think I’m gonna need more than a fucking bandaid for this.” She said, rolling her eyes and touching her hand to her side, flinching at the amount of blood that came off into her hand. She didn’t know how much of it was hers and how much of it belonged to the asshole who tried to mug her.
