Day 179: The Toast
Is it a millennial thing to be obsessed with toast?
Sourdough bread (local baker)
local tomatoes
mozzarella
hardboiled eg
pepper & flaky sea salt
I could eat loaded toast like this every single day.
Pups With No Job
The most important characters of The Toast are Theo and Bruno. They are arguably the best part of the podcast, the sisters refer to them as prestigious businessmen who must work to support the family but never do. They add a hilarious component to the show as well as a cute factor. The dogs have been struggling with Jackie's recent move to Florida, but nevertheless, they continue to be the handsome men of The Toast.
tangent
In my previous post, I touched on tik tok being used as a tool to reach more audiences as well as grow their brand recognizability. The Toast hosts Claudia and Jackie LOVE using tik tok to post snippets of their show in hopes of going viral and reaching niche audiences.
Other Gen Zers began listening to podcasts after being introduced to podcast clips on Youtube, TikTok, Instagram, and other social channels.
As much as Jackie Oshry loves social media, the new mom cannot fathom having TIkTok on anything other than her iPad. This leaves Claudia responsible for keeping Jackie up to date with the trends and sounds that take over many social media posts.
Podcasts and Gen Z
Nearly 50% of gen z users use Spotify specifically for podcasts (Jackson). Personally, I prefer apple music, aka the app that comes pre-downloaded on your iPhone that you either use multiple times a day or it sits in the cloud. Research has found that the pandemic led to an increase in Gen Z podcast listeners. During the lockdown, podcasts became a way for individuals to stay up to date with current events and news. With the growth of tik tok, podcast clips were also spread to new audiences, take Sadie Jackson's experience as an example:
"For myself, I was much more inclined to try a podcast when I recognized the host from somewhere else (YouTube, Instagram, etc.). For example, I’d seen Emma Chamberlain’s YouTube videos before, but I got a better idea of her character and essence on her podcast. That was enough to get me to listen once but not continue listening."
In Jacksons' article, she also touches on how she prefers to listen to millennial hosts.
Gen Zers are becoming independent from their parents, developing their values and beliefs, and attempting to find one’s identity. With John and Hank Green, I was eager to get wisdom from people who had already gone through the struggles of being a young adult.
I relate to her feelings exactly. The toast's hosts feel like two older sisters talking back and forth, and maybe that's because my two real sisters are their age, but regardless it brings a sense of comfort to me when I listen to them. Jackson also makes the point of gen z wanting to hear from people who have already been through the struggles of being a young adult as well as people who have a "solidified sense of self".
To sing or to listen...
Think back to the last time you were in your car, were you blasting your music, or were you blasting the sound of someone else's voice? Dont get me wrong, there is nothing I love more than screaming a good Taylor Swift song, but I know I've been on a podcast grind recently. There is something comforting about listening to others having a conversation, and the results from a NuVoodoo survey agree with me. Forty-nine percent of podcast consumers listen to podcasts in the car, forty percent at work, thirty-six while doing chores, and twenty-five percent on public transportation. While doing all of these activities, it would be assumed that you're listening to music, however, over the last couple of years more and more people have found enjoyment in audio shows.
Why podcasts? For me, it's the fact that sometimes I just don't feel like singing or humming along, or get tired of looping the same tracks. Podcasts are a breath of fresh air that allows you to feel accompanied while also not over stimulating your environment.
My roommate and I have consistently been choosing podcasts (specifically The Toast) over music all semester. We enjoy the toast because of the sisters' unhinged personalities and their ability to keep you entertained and laughing. The podcast setup includes a "catch-up" between the two and then leads into the "fast five stories you need to know before you take a bite out of your morning toast". Following the stories, there are segments dependent on the day of the week; House of Dragon TV Recap, Real Housewives TV Recap, Dear Toasters, and Unburden Yourselves. Having a variety of segments throughout the week keeps listeners engaged and wanting more while also looking forward to the next week's show.
Something the toast also does exceptionally well that not all other podcasts do is create a daily show as well as have bonus content. The toast community is easily the most loyal fanbase I've ever seen, with Facebook groups, Patreon, and a youtube channel it is safe to say the internet is obsessed with these girls.
TNN
Toast News Network is composed of 8 different podcast shows:
-The Toast with Jackie and Claudia Oshry -Girls Night with Alexis Water -The Redheads Book Club -MOOD with Lauren Elizabeth -The Snatchelor -The Shvitz -Caviar Dreams, Tuna Fish Budget with Margaret Josephs -Maternity Liv with Olivia Oshry
The network came to be after their original podcast, "The Morning Breath" was canceled by Verizon's Oath. The sisters decided that they would create a space where they could own their own podcast and produce on their own network to refrain that from ever happening again. Thus, The Toast News Network came to be.
TNN is home to Boy and Girl With No Job, personalities from bachelor nation, and Housewives.
Let's Get Personal
My personal podcast library is a mess. I got into podcasting through my two older sisters who are 29 and 27. I find myself bouncing between podcasts depending on the mood I'm in, however podcasts have become a part of my daily life. I know when I get in the car on my way to work that I'll be listening to The Toast to learn about all the things that have happened in pop culture in the last day, then ill move to Sadie Robertson's 'Whoa, That's Good' show for encouragement and wisdom. My third go-to is Drama Queens, the One Tree Hill rewatch/recap special to play as I cook, clean, or do homework. I've recently found myself listening to podcasts more than music, if you would've told me that last year, I would've laughed.
