Episode 3 of The Trip—Superman of Havana—is out! Listen to Mitch Moxley tell the tale of his and photographer Michael Magers' search for the most famous sex star of pre-Revolutionary Cuba. On iTunes now!
So this video is made out of some documentations–from this journey’s friends, of course–and so I put them into this compilation (with a skill and apps that is very basic, pardon me).
There are some locations where those documentations were taken, as you can see in that video. The first is Banda Aceh, where we touched down after the flight from Jogja and Jakarta. We were landing in Sultan Iskandar Muda airport, one of a kind airport that looks awesome because it has dome on top of it’s roof, but unfortunately no one has documented it so I didn’t put it in the video but if you’re curious you’d better head over to google, chances are you’re going to admire it as I do.
About the weather, as you might've known, Aceh is one of the regions under the Equator line which makes the common atmosphere around it hotter than any other regions in the tropical countries. And I’ve really got no idea of how hot it would be untill I’m out of the airport building, and it was like I almost couldn’t stand. And so the journey begins..
June 2017 was coincided to be the month of Ramadhan, we were fasting untill around 7 PM–in that hour, the sky is still light–and we made to the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque to experience tarawih prayer. This one is a must-to-visit place if you’re ever going to be in Aceh, no regret. Not just because it has a beautiful design which look alike Nabawi Mosque in the sacred city of Madinah, but it's really a different one.
And we’re going on with other destinations, still around the city of Banda Aceh. This one is somehow quite famous for it is a memorial landmark: Aceh Tsunami Museum. Okay, so actually the locations I mentioned in the video is a must-to-visit so I will recommend this one too. You’ll see some miniatures from the damaged buildings and environment, names of the disaster’s victims, movie documentations, etc. It really will touch you to the heart. And then.. PLTD Apung Museum. It is actually a diesel power plants ship which was also damaged by the great disaster and got stuck over some citizens’ home.
And…. We continued to sail on a small–not really small, fortunately–boat to Pulau Nasi, a small island on the west tip of Indonesia along with Pulau Breueh, Pulau Weh–where the famous city of Sabang is located–, and other smaller islands. We sailed across the sea for about an hour more or less from Ulee Lheue (re: ulélé) port to the island, there are two ports available for a tiny island: Deudap and Lamteng (named after the village).
Once you’re stepping on the land you’ll find wonder all over the beaches. All of them are naturally beautiful like WOW or so as most of us thought, of course you can judge it for yourself from the documentations in the video above and if you get the chance to look after for more documentations on the internet just go ahead, only if you’re curious enough about how beautiful it could be. Besides the beaches, there are also small mountains covered with forest where some people utilize it to grow a few kinds of crops, and there are also swamp. Oh, and nevermind the road because there are cows everywhere and of course also it’s dung. Not only cows that seems to be wild–for they’re usually being around the settlement freely, but belive me they belong to someone–there are also wild boar in the forests, once I witnessed one running around the field on the day of Idul Fitri, as you can imagine, it was black, kinda big, but no need to worry because it won’t run after you if you do no harm to it.
The last location is Pulau Breueh. We happened to be visiting it under the offer of the chief of the island–Mukim customary government who rules over the chiefs of gampong (villages). In this island, we hiked to the legendary lighthouse called Williams Torrent–a Dutch colonialist–which will take you to approximately 85 meters high above the surface. The view from above paid off the tiring 2 kilometers long walk from the port through the wood. It was very beautiful and windy and rainy. And the water along the sea is green and clear that makes you feel like dive deep into it.
So, I think we’re coming to an end. More posts are coming (hopefully) very soon. And yes, Indonesia is very beautiful and no one should miss that! So let’s get to know the world and make ourself more adventurous.
Here, I wanted to give a preface about my two months journey beyond my beloved home-island. So, there it goes..
It happened on June to august for it was a duty from the university’s compulsory programme, but in this (and hopefully in a few more of the following) post I’m just going to talk about how it was for being there, what I learned, and whatever comes to my mind hahaha. Oh, and so actually this kinda topic that I wanted to share is coming from a promise to a (old) friend of mine ---shout out to nuhawesome--- to share about this, so I thought tumblr would be a great place to post them up, because I love tumblr and why not?
So.. in that two months (of duty) I got the chance to experience living in Aceh. I was really interested when I took an ethnography class in my fifth semester ---just for your information I took a major in Cultural Anthropology--- and it was talking about Aceh in particular. Why it had me interested? First, the province of Aceh in general has their own traditional law that they still insist to maintain. Second, they had long long stories that build the society into some kind of unique and distinctive, also the people had lots of racial mix. And third I was planning to do a final research for my degree---which, then I do not proceed because I switched to another topic.
I think that is for an introduction, in the next few posts I would be explaining about some specific topics about Aceh that I found interesting and worth to share.
Any question just go straight ahead to ask section, or simply reply or comment below!
So as mentioned in my description I'm currently more active on my side blog. I do plan to use this one to post art I draw and advertise my side blog! So if you'd like to check it out (and the retcon I did) go for it! Third and final part of retcon is a work in progress.
Just watched #thetrip directed by #tommywirkola who did #deadsnow. It is on #netflix and I highly recommend it. Brutal, bloody and darkly funny. https://www.instagram.com/p/CljYyI2s5B58vsStpGSnlVEl2SBiTzRfYxehGM0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
