The Tuxedo (2002)
I understand the need to make films aimed solely at children, but are they contractually required to be dumb? The Tuxedo is occasionally funny and star Jackie Chan has a lot of charisma, but the story is so poorly written I’d be hard-pressed to recommend it, even for kids.
When an assassination attempt leaves his employer in the hospital, chauffeur Jimmy Tong (Chan) takes it upon himself to solve the case. After donning his employer’s tuxedo - a specialized piece of mechanical engineering that gives the wearer special spy abilities - Jimmy teams up with CSA agent Del Blaine (Jennifer Love Hewitt). Together, they must stop Clark Devlin (Jason Isaacs), a bottled water mogul with an eye on global domination.
The plot of this film is so absurd it’s difficult to summarize quickly, and attempting feels like a waste of time. Basically, Jackie Chan plays a loser who puts on a super-suit, is transformed into a spy, and is forced to help save the world. I won't say you couldn’t make a good movie out of this premise, but this isn’t it. Jimmy is a cab driver hired by Clark Devlin (Jason Isaacs). Devlin is injured and sent to the hospital, so Jimmy has to stumble upon his super suit, put it on, and decide to masquerade as his employer on the field. Equally forced is the villain’s plan. He plans on infecting rival bottled water companies’ products with bacteria… or is it virus? The film is inconsistent about this. Anyway, it turns people into mummies by dehydrating them in a matter of minutes. Once people realize how deadly his rival's bottled water has become, they’ll have to either buy his product… or settle for regular tap water. Wait, what?
The Tuxedo takes place in a dimension populated by idiots. When you need someone gone, nobody chooses simple solutions like guns or knives. Instead, they use impractical means that – surprise, surprise - fail every time. Clues the audience will decipher in minutes are monumental struggles for Jimmy, Blaine takes forever to catch on that the bumbling man she’s partnered up with isn’t the genuine article, and everyone else is thankful that they haven’t accidentally killed themselves brushing their teeth that morning.
It’s badly directed with childish jokes, scenes that go nowhere, and unconvincing special effects. The writing is sub-par with a lame romance and villains that are as threatening as wet noodles. Nothing makes any sense, but you will laugh occasionally. It's a small comfort quickly dashed when you see Jackie Chan doing his stunts. He's a star. He could’ve been in a great movie instead of wasting his talents on The Tuxedo, which uses wires to accentuate action numerous times.
For little kids, you can do better. As a parent you’ll quickly grow tired of this foolishness. You’re better off ignoring The Tuxedo, but if you see it, stick around for the end credits, which feature Chan's trademark gag reels. These are easily the funniest part of the film. (On DVD, November 11, 2016)
