1 Kings 19 tells us of the prophet Elijah.
A wicked queen had called for his head, and so he ran.
Stranded, hunted, abandoned, he fled for his life into the mountains.
And there he cried to God.
“I’ve been zealous for you, Lord!”
“I’ve been zealous for you. I’ve walked the high road.
I’ve borne the heavy load,
And now my world erodes,
And I don’t hear a word from you.
Is there an echo?
A piercing dial tone?
I’m drowning slowly,
I thought you’d show up by now, that you would know me,
Surely…
You’re seeing what I’m seeing.
Your people have stopped believing.
They’re self-deceiving.
Tearing down Your altars, and living without reason
They’ve killed Your prophets.
I’m the only one left alive.
Thrown outside, and now I’ve got an army on my hide.
You said You would provide, but we’re here now.
I’m asking to die.
Rejection, dejection, affliction, conviction,
I feel like I’m the one walking towards crucifixion,
It’s night here and I don’t hear You.
Take my life.”
And God replied,
“Go stand on the mountain in my presence. I’m about to pass by.”
1 Kings 19:11-12 says “Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.”
You want to know something crazy?
The author never tells us what God whispered.
Only that Elijah covered his face, and chased after it.
And maybe that’s it.
Headfirst, into the mist,
Stumbling blind, following a whisper, His whisper.
Whispers in His Word.
Whispers in the moments when I choose to be silent and listen.
To press in, to show up, to let Him in, and let Him speak.
After the fire, after the hurricane, after the earthquake of my everyday.
A gentle whisper.
See, God, when I tell you I’ve had enough, I’m not enough,
I’ve been zealous for you, and the road’s still tough.
You don’t come sweeping in like a rushing wind.
You don’t need to crash through mountains.
You’re not here to settle the score, or shout a retort.
You don’t match me roar for roar,
No. You don’t need to shout to be heard,
You whisper measured words
And it is always my measure.
Enough for the hour, the pressure,
You never are silent. You’re quiet.
You’re the God who whispers.
