well, it’s hard to explain bc it means a lot of different things for different people, but it’s basically when you identify as or connect strongly to a certain thing (usually an animal or a character).

often it’s a spiritual kind of thing, like “i have the soul of [x]” or “i was [x] in a past life”. it’s also pretty commonly used as a coping method for stuff like trauma and mental illness, because having a unique but concrete thing to attach your identity to can be really comforting for some folks. i’m sure there are other reasons too, but those are the most common ones off the top of my head.
