Featured Geek: Erika Peterman
[On being a female geek in a male dominated world] “My friend Vanessa and I created Girls-Gone-Geek.com almost five years ago in part because we wanted to prove fandom is diverse — that it doesn't belong to one group of people. I've identified as a geek since I was a kid, so I don't really think about it unless someone expresses surprise that I'm into comics and such. However, I do feel a responsibility to speak up about hostility toward female fans or sexist representations of women in comics.”
Erika is a writer and editor with a passion for comics. She describes herself as that person who is at the comic shop every week “like clockwork.” Although you can find her geeking out on comics, Star Wars, and cosplay, her true love is Wonder Woman. Erika has been a Wonder Woman fan since childhood, adding that if she had the money, her house would be packed with Wonder Woman collectibles and art. She even keeps a framed portrait of Wonder Woman by George Perez in her office as inspiration. Erika also enjoys going to conventions, and hopes that one day she’ll be able to attend geekgirlcon*. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, discovering new music, and is starting to get “serious about writing fiction,” but she adds that her “greatest and most challenging adventure so far is raising two kids, ages 9 and 14.”
