It’s December 1—time to break out the Christmas music! The 80s saw the traditional novelty Xmas record get a major reinvention, with lots of tracks released that were a little more worldly or at least which gave a wink while extolling the virtues of holiday cheer and good will toward men. Here’s four cases in point: The Three Wise Men were actually XTC being a tad mischievous, while Billy Squier brought an ever-so-slight bit of hard rock to his single. The Waitresses’ “Christmas Wrapping” has become a revered holiday staple and is still as fun as it was back then. Spinal Tap’s “Christmas With The Devil,” released around the time of the original movie, plays into the comedy shtick that they are clueless and don’t realize how awful they’re being, but it was a tasteless track back then and time hasn’t done it any favors. Anyway, as an aside, my pal Paroo runs an entire Facebook group dedicated to holiday novelty records, Jolly Juke, so if that’s your thing, go join it and tell her I sent you.
