Hello! I was wondering if there was a martial art that is a combination of striking like Muay Thai and grappling and throwing like Judo?
The one modern martial art in which you’ll find all three aspects that you mentioned, specifically with Muay Thai for striking and Judo for throws, with their grappling heavily focused on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, is Mixed Martial Arts.
Finding a style that has all three aspects now a days is very difficult, but styles that do have two or all three of these aspects, along with some others are: Karate, Krav Maga, Aikijutsu, Angampora, Shorin Ryu Kenpo, Shorinji Kenpo, Kuk Sool Won, Pankration, among others.
Or at least they should. Now-a-days, most styles are very watered down and focus on regulated competition. For this reason, many styles focus on what they do specifically for competing, rather than what the “traditional” style did.
Karate, for example, has a myriad of striking, throwing and grappling techniques, along with Tuite (joint locking, pain inducing and controlling techniques), pressure points, Koppojutsu (bone breaking), weapons, etc.
But with heavy regulations as these martial arts became martial sports, they slowly started banning many techniques, and so, many schools don’t even practice them anymore, hence why I say it’s very difficult to find a more complete style.
You can always, if time and wallet allows, cross train specialties, say, focusing on what’s most important to you, and then cross training in other styles to compliment. For example, Muay Thai as a main art, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a secondary, and then say once a week, or on a seminar basis, do Judo as an in between of the two.
A lot of people now a days cross train for that very reason, so that’s always an option.
