He’d thought for quite some time about whether or not he should reveal his secret. But he’d messed up with her last time he’d been in the cowl. It was part of the reason why he’d stopped wearing it in the city. His thumb hovered over the screen of his phone, eyes fixed upon a single name. “AVA”.

AHA! he was indeed most pleased to find that amongst the sea of wasted and useless folk which the city played host to, one familiar face had remained. how despairingly cruel it was to have kept a girl so small, so slight, by her lonesome in this place! he had forgotten about her the moment he had left, and even he knew that she surely deserved to leave if but only for a year. ah, but she wasn’t as timid as the autumnal leaves she was shaded to stand beside, not as dimly lit as the flickering of a weeping candle! she was FIRE & STRENGTH for he has seen it in her only an evening some years prior. she was stronger than she seemed, he rather liked that in a person.

“ HA HA! “ he yells, loud enough to deafen those standing too close. “ isn’t it the little pumpkin-slayer from my last visit! “ his hands settle upon his hips, the jacket agape as the winter winds whipped him. alas, he felt no chill but endless fire within his heart, the heat of his strength some eternal flame. “ and here i thought they’d have rewarded you with some release time. nobody came to bail you out, i see. ah well, you’re not missing much out there i assure you. “ he spoke to her as casually as he might a friend, but mistake him not for kind or generous with his words. he was glad to see her, as one is glad to see their own pet hound upon returning home, how one may feel warm at the arrival of a familiar face at least.

“ ah, at least it must be nice to see a face you had thought abandoned you hm? let my return offer you some comfort! “

Savior’s Respite, one of his favorite quiet spots despite or perhaps because of its morbid legends. Many mornings and afternoons find him there, staring out over cliff’s edge, lost in his thoughts be they troubled or peaceful. This afternoon is no different, except that on his quiet arrival to the worn path his eyes are drawn to something else first.

Familiar red hair, vibrant and crimson, parted by two horns. The shorter girl is in the midst of what appears to be diving out of sight, which, in retrospect, fits with her shyer moments. It’s almost hard to believe she once let lava flow over districts, but only almost.

It’s been so long since that fateful day and turbulent times back in the hive, but he pushes memories aside to call out to her instead.

“Ava...? Is that you?” Oz says, scanning the foliage where he thinks she might be, “Please, don’t hide on my account.”
