I chose this picture for a few reasons, one because I believe science and religion come together to play a huge role in shaping humanity and our values. Faith teaches us many of our core values and one typically is to be kind and understanding of others, crucial in such a crazy and constantly changing world. Science teaches us some truth about the way things work and together we can combine both to find balance and discover meaning. So I really love what this picture symbolizes, science and religion all interconnected and becoming a shared religion. Another reason for choosing this image is because since there are nearly 7 billion people on the planet, there are thousands of religions and varieties of faith and I love that this image encompasses many (of course, not all religions are pictured) since we are all a part of this world, we all have a role and we are all one. This image relates well to our American Religious Diversity class because as Professor Whitacre once stated, “we cannot understand the history of America if we do not understand all the religions that have played a role in shaping our country,” our society and even our entire world. I think that this image is trying to convey a similar message, that we must understand all religions and incorporate some science and we will be able to better understand the world and thrive in it. I love what this image stands for, trying to bring everyone and their beliefs united in some way. I think critics of this image would be major religions, like Christianity, that fear the secularization hypothesis, where they believe science leads to the end of faith. I think that no matter what science emerges, that many need to have faith in higher creators to give reason to events that occur in the world and for that reason faith will never disappear.
