Fun fact about me: I was a ballerina for my entire childhood, and I actually wanted to go professional when I was a pre-teen (that's actually the reason why my English is so good. When I was around 10 I found a pro-shot of the English Royal Ballet's The Nutcracker and fell in love with the company (it's still my favourite), and when I found their principle male at the time was also Brazilian, Thiago Soares, I started to believe that everything is possible, so I started focusing really hard on learning English so I could move to London, but my parents couldn't afford both Ballet and English classes, so I chose the cheapest option and went with English). And let me tell you, the amount of toxicity in the Ballet environment (it's worth it if you really have passion for the art, though) is even more insane than at Shiz University. I was the odd one out (the fat, autistic, weird brown kid), so I was their assigned Elphaba Thropp (and I was actually treated worse than Elphaba was. The most toxic places are always the ones where you combine high competitiveness, rich, stuck up kids and an aesthetics culture. Musical Theatre, where I am now, is also like that). So like, if we replace Shiz University for a Ballet school, like Vaganova, we get an AU where the levels of bullying and outcasting Elphaba suffered makes a lot more sense.
See this:
Elphaba: the incredibly talented prodigy with a burning passion for art, who longs to be recognised and admired for her talent, but is treated like shit and sabotaged by her peers because she doesn't fit in;
Glinda: do I really have to explain why she fits in here? Her prequel book is even going to establish she used to be in dance competitions as a child. But let me tell you, there are ballet mean girls that are even worse than Glinda in real life (they will legit rip your stockings and wet your pointes);
Fiyero: there are three types of men in Ballet in my opinion. The ones that are gay and just love to dance, the ones that are straight/bi and went in to get girls and ended up genuinely loving it, and the ones that are straight/bi that really just love to dance and love the bonus of getting girls, and they exist in equal amounts. I think Fiyero would be the last one of them;
Boq: well, he would be the second option of the aforementioned three types of men in Ballet;
Nessa: like Elphaba, she's a prodigy... pianist who follows their every class and rehearsals and also loves to design some of their costumes and sets. If it's book!verse, she could even be a ballerina like Brazilian armless ballerina Vitória Bueno.
