I wouldn't read too much into the whole "consolation prize" thing. TV Line just seems to think it would be clever to say that (even though it's ignorant). Plus Jeff already said we haven't seen the last of Danny. Which if he does that means there are 4 gay characters this season (Danny, Mason, Corey, & Lucas).

Jeff couldn't even give Danny a compelling storyline apart from Jackson, how would have four gay teens floating around help in any way?
