hello harpsicord, I have a random question - where do you think gemma keeps her backup knife? (I feel like she might have a backup weapon, but I could be wrong) and does anyone other than her know about it?
hello lovebug, this is a wonderful question.
gemma herself is a knife. a knife with a plush mouth, girl-soft curve of flesh shape that lulls people into a false sense of security. is that fair? no. but she never asked them to look at her. she is always the apex predator, the smartest person in the room, even in 'verses where she appears weakened.
as for secondary weapons, it truly depends on the verse:
coolverse: gemma's got a mean left hook and brass knuckles in the inner pocket of her jacket. she used to carry a knife but she gave it to tom when he turned 21.
smartverse: there's both pepper spray and mace in her handbag as well as a keyring on her apartment keys that can and will inflict serious damage if anyone tries anything. nick knows since she bought him the same keyring after he came from a night out with a broken nose and black eye following a mugging.
gravity fallsverse: the walls she's built up around herself are her best weapon of defense in this but coots gives her a knife (that original gemma gave coots' ancestor holtby back in the 1840s).
borgiaverse: the dagger was her matteo's and lived strapped to her inner thigh until it was taken from her shaking, blood-wet hand by jonny the morning she killed a cardinal; he told her to go, he would fix clean this up. and she hasn't found her voice to ask for it back yet.
royalverse: the sword of peter the great of russia somehow ended up in gemma's position just before their russian grandmother's death and everyone is too afraid to ask.
witchverse: she can literally move the blood in men's bodies, hypnotise with her voice, and raise the tides to flooding. gemma needs no other weaponry in this. but only jonny knows the true extent of her powers. and she would never use them on him. but, because of his wolf abilities that are sometimes beyond his control, he gave her a silver switchblade should she ever need it against him.
immortalverse: gemma is approximately 3000 years old and has seen it all. she's also collected a lot and many of the items she carries on her person have sentimental value. she's got: a poison ring she wears on her pinky from 120CE, a flip knife with "per favore spezzami il cuore" on the handle from an old love in 1492, a single bullet gun disguised as a lipstick from 1932, and a taser that stopped post's heart for 16 seconds in 2017.
