Will also talked about how it is important for us to view self love as self discipline. it is about how our actions in the present time have an effect on how we feel in the future. he said self discipline is “to forgo immediate pleasure for the exchange of long term self respect.” lets sit with that for a while and think about all the little things we do (or don’t do) in a day that take away from our feeling good about ourselves. it is so easy to give advice to others, because we feel we are coming from a place of love and wanting to see them do better and succeed in life... but really it is also because we feel the lack of control over our own situation. you are the player and the coach both. you are the will to work and you are your own cheerleader in life. you can’t not root for yourself. you just can’t. it redefines the meaning of being gentle with yourself, with your heart. it is to be mindful for how you feel and take action that would prevent your heart from hurting itself, to let go of habits that are not nurturing to your growth. saying to yourself, i know you want to mindlessly scroll and procrastinate to avoid facing the real world, but if you do that you're not going to feel good about yourself. i love you too much to let you do that. if you wanna be happy you have to love yourself and you have to discipline your behavior. the road to sustained happiness is through disciplining your behavior.

Buzz-fueled media

Some interesting things from the latest Wired cover story by Mat Honan, Inside the Buzz-Fueled Media Startups Battling for Your Attention.

1. Women share online more than men do. 

2. Buzzfeed knows this, targets Pinterest.

3. It realized that readers who come to the site from Pinterest aren’t looking to share elsewhere, so it stopped showing Twitter share buttons to people who came to its stories from Pinterest.

4. Pinterest is now the site’s second-largest social referrer, after Facebook and ahead of Twitter.

5. Seems obvious in retrospect, but I had never considered it. Buzzfeed uses "headline optimizers." 

"It can take a few different headline and thumbnail image configurations and test them in real time as a story goes live, then spit back the one that is most effective. Once a story goes up, an algorithm looks at the early traffic and social activity and predicts whether it is going to be a hit. Editors can then decide whether they should throw more social media resources behind the story to help promote it or just let it die on the vine."

Things of Note

Still looking for a full-time position. Still waiting to hear back from applications. Still not good with patience. 

Am doing quite well as an Adjunct though. Teaching three Information Literacy Courses this week. 

Excited for today's class because the prompt was to find literary analysis for Game of Thrones and C.S. Lewis's That Hideous Strength. 

Research the items have sparked a slight literary passion once more. Maybe I should have done my Masters in English?

Nah, I think I'm doing okay with this library gig.

Which brings me to a different point. 

I've given up hope of becoming a public librarian. This academic library gig is not bad. I like working with college students and I make every attempt in my interactions to showcase how important library resources can be for their projects. 

Cause what I'm teaching is what I used in my own grad work

Foundation, people. It's how you succeed. 

Which brings me to another point

Camp NaNoWriMo is next month. 

I have plans on competing but I realize that I have this sudden urge to go back to the barista humor book from last November instead of working on this children's fantasy idea. 

Thoughts from the crowd? 

I'm doing okay, by the way. 

I might need to clean up my Tumblr a bit. 

I'm getting a little over some fandoms of mine. It will be nice to clean the air for a while. 

Beyond that...

I think things aren't that bad. 

They could be better

But they're better than they were this time last year.
