Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. (Colossians 3:1, 2 NIV)
This World Is Not My Home
“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sits on the right hand of God.” - Colossians 3:1
First Peter 2:11 says that we are aliens and strangers in this world. We are in the world, but we are not of the world. We are twice-born in a world of once-born people, and we’re going to find ourselves going against the tide most of the time.
It’s like a deep sea diver who is underwater and outside his natural environment. He could not live if he weren’t linked to his life supply above. That’s the way we need to live. If we are to survive, we must stay linked to Jesus who is our life.
The Bible says we’re not to set our affections on things beneath, but on things above where Christ sits at the right hand of the Father. (Colossians 3:1)
It’s time to check your lifeline…are you trusting in anything in this world? Are you making friends with the things of this world?
things above.
Every time I come home on a break I have so many great expectations.
For this break in particular I expected to get to relax and enjoy resting up after a long and crazy semester. I looked forward to spending a lot of time with my friends and family, and I just knew I would get to do so many fun wintery activities! Nonetheless, every break I come home with similar expectations, and every time I feel some sense of disappointment. My family and friends work all day and I have not spent much time with them, I have spent so much time Christmas shopping and getting ready for my cousin’s wedding that I have not had much time to relax, and up until yesterday it hadn’t even snowed!
In general, we have a lot of expectations of what this life should be like. We so often fall into the lie that this world can bring us pure happiness. We look ahead to the weekend, breaks, graduation, marriage, and our future lives because we have such hope that they will make us feel great and everything will be perfect. This thinking is completely unbiblical. The truth is, putting hope in anything in this world can guarantee you disappointment. As Paul writes in Colossians 3:1-4 “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.” What glorious riches there are for us in Christ Jesus! This passage says that if we know the gospel and have been raised with Christ and are freed from our sins that we should seek these things! As each of you goes through this break, pray that God would help you to set your mind on “the things that are above.” This world is broken and full of disappointments, but one day Christ will come back and we will be a part of His kingdom forever.
Praise the Lord!!
