I didn't know what I'd do when you were my assigned gift recipient in the Sokkla Community Holiday Gift Exchange, but I was immediately hyped about creating something for you. While I haven't read everything you've written, it's safe to say I've liked everything I've read of yours. So much so that, without your awareness, I owe my thesis subject (thus, my graduation), to the ideas you sparked in my head with The Gentleman of Weapons. Hence, this gift wasn't just an assignment for me but a very big thank you for everything you've done for me without even knowing it.

The lines featured in this comic are, of course, your own writing: Looking With a Tender Eye is, if I recall correctly, the first of your works I ever got to read, and the second-to-last scene of the second chapter has stuck with me ever since. I've always felt that dialogue expressed extraordinarily well the tragedy of the two child soldiers and commanders who needed a greater purpose and had so much more in common than they ever realized. Thus, this comic is a tribute to that scene, not fully based on the fic itself but inspired by Azula's words to Sokka in the fic's climax. I really hope this gift is to your liking, and that you've had a great Holiday season! Thanks for everything!

god even when he /has/ demonstrated anger it's always been... performative? Appropriate to his position? Like, SwordToThroatGate wasn't even him being genuinely angry! He just thought 'well this is the point where Leader Men get angry, so here goes I guess?' Fjord have you ever even raised your voice without seven different preflight checks

God, I love that, because it’s true. Fjord hasn’t raised his voice without asking himself several questions first or because it was literally necessary to shout (i.e. over a storm).

Like, I think we’ve seen him genuinely angry exactly once: Bazzoxan. And even that was relatively mild because attempting to manage and express the depth of his anger at what he perceived was a willful betrayal by Yasha was causing his mask to slip, so he visibly reins it in to keep control of himself.

I do think there was some genuine anger, not like deep-seated anger, more like just really mad about how things were going, when he held his sword to Caleb’s throat. But, that was less to do with his anger and more his control issues—feeling annoyed that things were spiraling out of his personal and direct control. But, it stands, I agree: the vast majority of his being visibly snappish or mad come across as performative, and he’s actually only vaguely annoyed at worst.

It has a minigame about fishing a friend of mine put like a day and a half of his life into. Otherwise it has a fantastic second act twist, but no actual second or third act because of I guess budget reasons

I FUCKING LOVE THE FISHING! All the myriad little side activities are so much fun and so unusually intricate for side activities.

Shame about the endgame being essentially nonexistent “whoops time to shove this thing off a cliff” but at least I’ll have fun getting there!

I don't know how to explain Metal Gear Rising. Imagine a story where the main character is the top half of a skull strapped to a robot body that has prehensile high heels. In his first appearance this skull used to be an entire human man that thought he was trained to be a soldier by VR, except he was actually a Liberian child soldier having a breakdown. In the story where he's become a cyborg it is revealed he taught himself katanas by watching Kurosawa. Metal Gear Rising is the sequel to that.

1. Y’all could tell me anything about Metal Gear and I’d believe you tbh. 

2. There needs to be a party game of “Metal gear, JJBA or The Simarilian” for less-hardcore nerds to be confused about

3. “He taught himself Katanas” is extremely suggestive to the degree of finesse learned.  It’s be like saying ‘I taught myself .

4. Apparently one of the bads  you have to face in MGR is Magnetic Buggy the Clown, who is a CO senator that ran for president in 2020 (the game was made in 2013)  the only one doing so currently is Mike Bennet who has the personality of a mayonaise and wonderbread sandwich, and the mental flexibility of a piece of uncooked spaghetti, so I can’t really see him going At-Will-Dismemberment Magneto on us.  Tipton tho? He’d be all over that weird shit.

5.  Kojima didn’t put the zoo in, which is terrible. Being able to steal and ride a giraffe into battle wouldn’t be out of place for one of his games.

Summary: It has been said that the sins of the fathers shall be visited upon the sons, but generally it is not meant to be the fathers doing the visiting. -- In which Ozai's self-control is even less evident than usual at a critical moment, and the consequences are felt for years afterwards.

Characters: Sokka, Azula, Katara, Ty Lee, Aang, Mai, Toph Pairings: Sokka/Azula, Katara/Ty Lee, Mai/Zuko

Recommendation @loopy777: This is an AU that plants a ‘nail’ into the past and starts at roughly the same time as the original AtLA cartoon. There’s a mix of mysterious new circumstances, with details slowly emerging and short flashbacks providing a trickle of context, and events from the cartoon. While the gAang’s journey hits the ‘Stations of the Canon,’ it breezes over the stuff we’re familiar with and provides interesting new POVs into the events that keep things interesting. The primary focus is on Sokka and Azula, as they move along on separate plotlines that keep (to Sokka’s exasperation) converging, and anyone who’s read this author before knows he’s pretty much mastered the voices and psychology of those characters. However, all of the main characters get their chances to take over the POV and add their voices to the mix.
