# 149 "My Whole Thing About That Is..."

Oh brother, you're about to launch into what you will later refer to as a "rant", which is to say, you will stay slightly more on topic than normal, and speak with slightly more passion.

Yawn.

First of all, "your whole thing"? What makes you so special? There're upwards of 7 billion people, but I have to spend part of my very finite life listening to your opinion? I didn't ask you for this. You're just not good at social cues.

Secondly, it's probably not even your thing, is it? It's probably from a blog you read, or from a comedian you heard. You are dishonestly trying to pass off someone else's content as your own. Just say where it came from. This is your opportunity to spread the word about whatever that thing is you're stealing from, but instead you're hurting it. That thing you thought was good enough to steal from.

Thirdly, there is absolutely no point to this preamble except to say that you're about to speak. We don't need that. Context is not a new thing. It's not like when you're watching a movie, you're constantly yelling at the screen "WHY ISN'T HE INTRODUCING HIS THOUGHTS WITH SOME HELPFUL CLUES ABOUT WHOSE THOUGHTS HE'S CONVEYING?" (This falls into the "just saying" category).

This is an example of an unfunny thing that, because it began by being associated with humor, people continue to think is funny just out of habit, and they refuse to be objective about how unfunny it really is now. Like Eddie Murphy, for example.

# 139 Treating "evidence" and "proof" as interchangeable

There is evidence for the proposition “The earth is the center of the universe.” There is evidence for the proposition “The Earth is not the center of the universe.” Those two propositions can’t both be true, obviously. Yet there is evidence for both. How can this be? Evidence isn’t proof. Having evidence on your side doesn’t decide the thing.

The thing is proven, that means it’s decided.

Why is that annoying? Because there are halfwits in the world, many of them are science reporters: journalists who say things that begin with “Scientists have proven that….” No they didn’t. They ran a trial and these were the results. They are pieces of evidence. They are not proof.

The other brand of halfwit is the guy who points to contradictory pieces of evidence and says “Scientists don’t know what they’re talking about.” You explain the above to them and they say, “Well what’s the point? If they’re not proving anything, then why do we find them?” First of all, your bar of excellence is pretty low. You want a system where scientists go around “proving” any old thing. And every claim and it’s opposite can all say they’ve been “proven”. What use is that? So you can continue to pick and choose what you believe, only now with “Science” on your side? Secondly, the point is: science is obviously fecund (go look it up), in spite of not proving things. And we can sum up all the evidence from all the different trials periodically and get an overall picture of which way the totality of evidence is pointing. Then we can draw (tentative) conclusions based on the best available evidence: all of it.

Not very sexy, I know. But when you read this title what did you expect?

Listen: this isn't even a life decision you've made, it's a photo op decision you've made to pose yourself in a ridiculous position--intentionally--to comment on its ridiculousness. Your persona is fraudulent. Stop celebrating your fraudulence. This does not interest me.

#152 “Snowmageddon” “Snowpocalypse” et al.

Here are two overdone things: acting like a snowfall is a major event, and making fun of people who act like a snowfall is a major event.

The most irksome in both of these camps use words like “snowmageddon”.

It’s real dumb. To be fair so is making a big hairy deal out of a light dusting. But limiting the way you deal with that dumbness to two or three canned, boring portmanteaus piles dumb on top of dumb. Knock it off.

Recently I saw a comedy club use this in posts (yes, that’s plural) on social media. I can only assume they are doing too much business, and have decided to irritate away any comedy fans who might be lurking around.
