I can't believe I just saw someone say that Max didn't care for Chloe, and she only did after getting to see her again after five years. Chloe held a grudge against Max because she left Arcadia Bay after William died. Max was, maybe, scared of contacting her after that because she was afraid that Chloe might shut Max off her life. She didn't want that, so she stayed silent. Guilt may also have been associated with her lack of contact. Also, in the alternate timeline, William was alive and Max stayed in contact with Chloe. Everything about Max and Chloe's friendship ( and care for each other ) was diddly fine on that timeline. The key factor here is William's death and Chloe's anger. Don't say Max didn't care. She did, but her fear and guilt stopped her from actually doing anything.
