12:07-12:36a Speed Reflection on College Choices

I still don’t really know why I chose Harvard.

I mean, on April 28th, I’d already told my friends and family that I like Stanford and Yale a whole lot, but Stanford wasn’t for me because it didn’t seem especially artsy, whereas Yale was this creative place where everyone was friendly and literally every student I saw on campus had some sort of lightness about them. As if they were, to use the cliché, walking on sunshine (despite the general lack of sunshine in New Haven). Harvard was mostly out of the running.

On April 30th, I had the Yale page open—all ready to matriculate—and a very shrill nagging voice urged me to open the Harvard page as well.

There’s something to be said for the phrase, “It’s good for you.” The whole use of the word “good” here carries so much weight. What’s good for me? Good as in easy, fun, character-building, comfortable, constructive, or difficult? What’s easy for me? What will make me happy, and what will make me real-world-ready? Which is more important? How do I know?

Even now, my friends question me. Most everyone has told me they’d thought I’d choose Yale. I usually reply that I thought I was going to choose Yale, too. And then they ask me why, and I generally reply with the stock “financial aid, better location, and more opportunities,” which I can assume that you, the select, privileged reader, know is not the real story.

Reality: On April 29th, I flipped a coin five times and all tosses came up heads for Harvard.

Was it a sign? I thought it was, until I realized this strange fluke of probability (perhaps homage to Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead!) could have been interpreted differently. If I’d truly, really wanted to go to Yale then I might have flipped the coin six, seven, eight times to get tails. I might have set aside the coin toss as “just a dumb method anyway.” I would label it as a “strange fluke of probability” and afterwards, laugh about it with my friends after having chosen Yale.

Perhaps a better question is, why not Yale?

It was [is?] my top choice, my early school, and honestly feels like home. I like[d] the students; I like[d] the professors. I like how the students interacted with the professors. I like the artsy-hipster-goofy-upbeat vibe and I like the adorable inflatable bulldog. I like the ridiculous frenzy of the extracurricular bazaar and I like the community of the residential colleges.

Harvard is good for me. Yale is good for me. I have nothing against Harvard; on the other hand, I have some sort of inexplicable burning, undying love for Yale (I still sing its praises if anyone asks where they should apply to college). Yale would have made me ecstatic on a daily basis, while I think Harvard might require multiple tentative adjustments, as if sitting down on a vaguely prickly surface. Yet, I didn’t pick Yale because, because, because...

Because I was curious. Because I was awed by the big H. Because of an unfortunate impulsive index finger that clicks buttons contrary to my heart’s desire. Because of really petty, trivial reasons, that somehow added up to outweigh the big, important ones? Because Yale made me happy and I am weirdly masochist or because Yale was comfortable and I needed spice? (Maybe “why not Yale” was not a better question after all.)

I love Yale—I don’t think this will ever change—but I chose Harvard. And I don’t think this will change either.

And so it goes... I love Yale; I chose Harvard. I love Yale; I chose Harvard. I love Yale; I chose Harvard.

Although this chant has been repeating itself in my brain for the majority of the time between May 1 and today, I still don’t know what to make of it. It’s one of my common “I love grilled cheese but chose turkey” or “I love clam chowder but chose chicken noodle” choices that I fear others might not quite understand.

The Solitude of Prime Numbers was a good book.

It was infuriating and heartrending and sweet and innocent throughout and it made me think a lot. It made me remember that the world is mostly an unkind place to be. Overall... the moral/message/theme-thing wasn't anything I haven't heard before. But then, most books aren't something I haven't heard before. This was the same message written pretty delicately and it was good. I can see why it was a bestseller! But it wasn't predictable and cliche like most other bestsellers and I enjoyed it very much.

I always wonder, though, for translated books, whether it'd have been better in its native language. Guess I'll have to learn Italian

1Q84

...I just finished reading 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami and I am so confused

The whole thing is just to mess with your head I swear

It's a love story but also a detective novel? and massively fantastical and also sci-fi-ish and I am so confused and I don't really understand but it was a good book and my mind feels like mush

Haruki Murakami also has an obsession with cats. Cats showed up in this book a lot, and one of the alternate worlds was called 'the cat town.' Also much of the book is only plausible if you are (a) slightly under the influence of alcohol, (b) in that tired state of oh-well-ishness before falling asleep and/or (c) just a little bit loopy for no reason at all. The last two of which I was for most of the book's reading. Also idk that last sentence didn't make sense

Also, it was very simply written! Style-wise, I mean. Despite the book being like..900+ pages long, it was a fast read in that there wasn't anything stylistically complicated. Although the plot was monstrously confusing so that probably balances out. Like Norwegian Wood, it's...sincere. Very sincere. And the writing is sparse, but filled out just enough so that you can follow along? I like this style very much.

"That would come later on. The words later on promised him eternity. Eternity was a single long pole that stretched out without end. The bowl tipped a bit again, and again his brains sloshed to one side."

and

Maybe the world really is ending, she thought. "And the kingdom is coming," Aomame muttered to herself. "I can hardly wait," somebody said somewhere."

Not everything is explained in the end. I think that is intended.

Not going to be able to sleep soundly for a couple nights, but I think that is acceptable given the reasons.
