Libertarians from the perspective of a Libertarian's liberal daughter - a rant
For those of y'all saying libertarians are socially liberal and fiscally conservative (technically true but its more complicated than that), let me clear some shit up for you (as the liberal daughter of a libertarian man who is a Big Deal in our local libertarian party).
I’m gonna be generalizing a lot here but the libertarian party is SUPER diverse so this doesn’t apply to all of the individuals! This is just my experience with the general “mood” of the libertarian party (my dad has taken me to some conventions, meeting, etc and he rants about politics a lot so I actually kind of know what I'm talking about).
Libertarians hate government involvement in… well, pretty much anything. From my perspective, it seems to me that libertarians are basically conservatives that realized how hypocritical the conservative party is. The conservative party, of course, claims to want a small, unintrusive government, yet tries to use the government to control the lives of others; they ban same sex marriage, they glorify war, and they want to control womens bodies along with the lives of minorities.
Libertarians see this hypocrisy and say, well, we don’t love gay people, or minorities, or women, but shit, we can’t be hypocrites!
(I’m sure some libertarians aren’t sexist, or homophobic, or transphobic, or racist, but a /LOT/ of them are, explicitly, at least a little bit problematic.)
Their ideology isn't really about morality. It is all about the belief that FORCE is WRONG. If two men decide to get married, and all people involved in the wedding consent to this wedding, then no one is being forced, so there is no reason for the government to stop them. If the government DOES interfer, it is FORCE, and that is BAD. However, if a baker does not consent to baking a cake for a gay wedding, any law requiring him to do so would be force as well... libertarians are for equality, NOT equity. Again, this isn’t about morals. My dad, personally, hates discrimination and finds it immoral, he just hates the idea of the government applying force.
Why am I explaining the general viewpoint of libertarians? I just want you to understand what they want. What they're motivated by, and why I won't call myself a libertarian, even though I lean more toward libertarian than authoritarian views:
Libertarians aren’t socially liberal because they support women and minorities, they’re socially liberal because they hate the government. In fact, they hate the government so much that in many ways, they AREN’T socially liberal. They don't want the GOVERNMENT to oppress women and minorities, but they are firmly against having the government protect the rights of women and minorities when INDIVIDUALS oppress us.
