I certainly didn't set out today wanting to highlight a band that reminded me of yesterday's post of Secret Machines. But that's exactly what happened. I was at Phono Select (Sacramento) to drop off a couple of copies of Buick "Sweatertongue" and found a Birds of Avalon CD.

When I got home I noticed that I owned "Operator's Midnight". What a great release. It was recorded and mixed in part by Mitch Easter. And it really recalls the work of Secret Machines, The Flaming Lips, and more recent Parquet Courts. In spots it has the groove of Still Flyin'.

Birds of Avalon (Raleigh, North Carolina) rose out of the ashes of The Cherry Valence. "Operator's Midnight" was released on Third Uncle Records.

Wow.  I found about this release yesterday via Third Uncle.  Indeed this is released on this excellent label, but it is also still available on the French label Montagne Sacrée Records.

Joujou Jaguar are a French band (Paris) with a decidedly American rock sound.  I hear distant sounds of The Dream Syndicate or The Ponys.  I also hear some deathrock (I’m loving both volumes of Killed By Deathrock).

Third Uncle is also releasing a 7″, “Cheap Life/Golem”.
