Eric Lafforgue's photos reveal the real North Korea
NORTH Korea remains a closed country for many, with only a few being able to enter the country and witness the ordinary people of the country living their lives.
Photographer Eric Lafforgue, however, has enabled us to have a glimpse into the lives of North Korea via his book, Banned From North Korea.
Talking to The Daily Mail, Lafforgue revealed that he was now banned from entering North Korea after the country’s authorities found out that he managed to slip out with photos he took that the authorities wanted him to destroy.
“Every visitor is warned not to take photos without the consent of the guides as soon as they arrive in Pyongyang, but in reality, it is impossible for them to monitor everything, especially when travelling with groups.
“They insist that you do not take photos of anything to do with the military and anything that could suggest poverty — even when you explain to them that it exists all over the world and even in France.”
The photos taken by Lafforgue suggest that North Korea is a third-world country, a fact that the authorities of the country try hard to mask, even to its own citizens.
He noted that while the North Koreans he encountered seemed “happy”, the poverty that existed in the country was unmistakeable.
“The guides tell you that they (teenagers) work in the fields in the same way that teenagers here have summer jobs (but) the difference is that in Europe they are paid, while in North Korea, it is a collective duty.
“I must say that they always seemed ‘happy’ and did not appear to be miserable, but the gap between poverty and patriotic enthusiasm is a narrow one.”
Lafforgue said that as a photographer, he wants to document what he sees, not what the authorities in North Korea wanted him to.
“I tried to document North Korea in the same way I would any other country in the world, but for them to accept it, you really need to follow their rules and for me, some of those rules just weren’t acceptable.”
