Sisterly Rivalry
little hayun wondering why her big sister and her nieces and nephew, and even her sisters in law (on their ring fingers at least) get these cool markings on their skin when she doesnt. she starts drawing purple and silvery blue lines on her body to match her family
(the first time rumi sees them, she cries. she used to try to cover hers up, and now her little sister is trying to add them just so she can look like rumi.)
when shes about 6 years old and in that “if rumi gets it, so should i” phase, she gets ANGRY about rumi having patterns. she starts to demand that she get them too. that the marker wont suffice anymore (not to mention, celine doesnt care if it’s washable or nontoxic, she doesn’t want her daughter drawing on herself with marker all the time), she wants them permanently. poppy slips up by mentioning that “the only way to get those patterns is by making a deal with gwi ma”.
hayun gets excited and she asks how she can do that, but celine stops her, looks her dead in the eyes, and says “hayun. if you make a deal with gwi me, he will take your soul and drag you down to the depths of hell and you will never get to see any of us ever again. do you want that?”
which of course makes hayun cry and poppy go “CELINE!” but it does prevent her from considering making a deal with gwi ma to get patterns.
(this is also when she finds out that rumi isn’t her blood related sister, because her parents explain to her about how rumi got her patterns. she cries a little about that, too, and asks if it means they’re not really sisters. as much as she fights with her, part of the reason she wants everything rumi gets is because she idolizes her. it would devastate her to not be sisters with rumi.
but her parents reassure her that of course she’s still her sister, the same way they’re still rumi’s moms. she feels a little better after that.)
when she’s 15 years old, hayun sneaks out of the house with a bunch of cash she stole from her eomma.
several hours and many panicked phone calls later, she returns to see her parents stricken with worry, and the rest of her family having arrived as well.
“where have you been?” celine demands, looking absolutely distraught and furious.
hayun bites the bullet, considering it the only option now that she’s surrounded by her family. she says, “getting this”, and pulls up her jacket sleeve, and then her shirt sleeve. the entire family gasps when they see her arm bandaged up.
celine assumes her baby has been hurt, and she rushes to check on her, and demands to know what happened, who did this to her, she’ll kill them-
poppy gasps and glares at her though. “you got a full sleeve tattoo?!”
celine freezes. hayun winces. “not a full sleeve, exactly…and not just the one…”
mira and zoey, who are not trying to let their children get the bright idea to go out and get their own tattoos, escort them from the room after that.
rumi sticks around, though. “can we see it at least?”
hayun shakes her head. “i wanna keep it a secret. at least until its healed.”
she gets grounded, but she does keep it a secret while she takes care of it herself (with minor assistance from her parents, who are pissed at her but don’t want their daughter getting an infection. not like poppy did when the sunlight sisters snuck out of their hotel room one night while drunk to go get tattoos of each other’s names, and no matter how many times miyeong and celine offered to help poppy care for hers, she refused).
when it does fully heal, and she shows it off to everyone, they all gasp.
its patterns. not exactly the same as rumi’s, but the same colors.
rumi is in tears. “why?”
hayun smiles and shrugs. “i wanted to match you, but using markers felt so childish and impermanent. this seemed better.”
rumi hugs her younger sister. hayun hugs her back.
(hayun pulls back a bit, and studies their arms next to one another. “mine are cooler,” hayun says smugly.
rumi snorts and pushes her away. “and now you ruined it.”)
Celine walking into a room where her three daughters (who, mind you, are 42, 11, and 5) are whispering about something, and then seeing all three of them turn towards her in sync, devious looks in their eyes. She tries to back away slowly, but she’s not fast enough, and she gets tackled by them. Rumi tries to be mindful of the fact her Eomma is almost 70, but Hayun and Nayoon don’t really understand what that entails.
Luckily, Celine still has hunter durability, and she doesn’t get hurt. Instead, her wives just find her buried under a pile of their daughters. Poppy takes so many photos while Miyeong just cries.
(Inspired by this comment by @b-quieter )
When she’s like, 6 or 7 years old, Hayun thinks that anything Rumi has, she should have, because they’re sisters. She learned this from watching Aeri, Jihae, and Hani share with each other. Usually this means things like food and toys, but there is a brief period of time where she thinks that includes something else, too.
Now, to Hayun, Mira and Zoey are the cool, pretty girls who are always with Rumi, and that Rumi kisses sometimes (and that her nieces and nephew call their moms, too). So, logically (in Hayun’s child brain, at least), because Hayun is Rumi’s sister, SHE should get to kiss Mira and Zoey, too. Every time Rumi kisses her wives, she rushes over to them and demands a kiss, too. No matter how many times Celine and Poppy try to explain that that’s not how that works, and that A) she should be asking, not demanding, kisses from people, B) not trying to kiss her sister’s wives, and C) not trying to kiss someone as old as Mira and Zoey are compared to her because all of that is inappropriate, Hayun won’t listen.
Mira and Zoey, for their part, just laugh it off at first, but whenever they do, it just makes Hayun pout and insist even more that she should get a kiss from them if Rumi does, which annoys the fuck out of Rumi. Things reach a boiling point where, at one point, Rumi tells Hayun that Mira and Zoey are HER wives, so she shouldn’t be trying to kiss them, and Hayun responds by telling her that if RUMI gets to have Mira and Zoey as wives, then so should SHE. This leads to the two of them getting into an actual fight, during which Rumi has to stop herself several times from telling her 6 year old sister that she “already stole [her] moms, she can’t have [her] wives, too.”
After witnessing whatever THAT was, Mira and Zoey decide that it’s time to firmly tell the 6 year old “no”.
Mira and Zoey sit Hayun down and explain to her that she can’t keep demanding that they kiss her just because Rumi gets to, because kissing isn’t like food or toys, and you don’t just deserve to kiss someone because your sibling kisses them. That when they got married to Rumi, they made a promise to her that they’d only kiss her (and each other), and going back on promises is wrong. That you can’t just demand someone kiss you, because that’s wrong, and people should get to decide what someone else does to them.
(They also tell her that if anyone tries to kiss her without asking, or anyone tries to demand kisses from her, to come to them, or her moms, or Rumi, or the girls, because they’ll beat that person up for Hayun.)
She finally stops demanding kisses from them after that.
But then she sees them give their daughters and son kisses on the forehead, and she very shyly comes up to them and politely asks if they can give her one of those kisses. Mira chuckles and Zoey giggles, but they do end up giving her a little kiss on the forehead as well. She smiles and thanks them, and then runs off.
Meanwhile, behind them, Rumi crosses her arms and pouts. “But where’s MY kiss on the forehead?”
(They call her a brat, but they do give her a kiss, too.)
celine waking up in the middle of the night because she senses a Disturbance and looking around to see that miyeong is still in bed and sleeping just fine which is a relief because she just gave birth a month ago, and the last time miyeong was a month post partum, she died.
but poppy is missing, so celine goes to find her, making sure to let miyeong sleep because she hasn’t gotten a good nights rest since the baby was born.
she checks on the baby, but nayoon is also sleeping just fine.
hayun is missing from her room however, which sets off alarm bells in celine’s brain, which only get louder when she hears a noise coming from the kitchen.
she pulls out her weapon (think arakhs from asoiaf/got, not sure what the real name for them would be) and walks over to see whats in the kitchen and if it has her wife and daughter
the lights are off. there are feral noises coming from within.
quickly she turns the lights on and-
there, sitting in the kitchen, on the floor, are poppy and hayun, lower faces and hands covered in peanut butter, looking at her with wide, guilty eyes.
celine commands them to clean up their mess and get back to sleep.
all poppy and hayun can say in return is “yes dear/eomma 😞”
i think mira and zoey know that for as much as she fucked up a lot during rumi’s childhood, celine did still spoil the fuck iut of her. after all, their girlfriend (and later wife) is an absolute brat who pouts and whines when things arent a specific way she likes them.
but i dont think they REALLY realize just how much celine was holding back on spoiling her until hayun is born and they see the absolute NIGHTMARE of a brat she becomes with a combination of celine’s spoiling, poppy’s spoiling, and the fact that she’s getting the treatment rumi (and hayun too) deserved to have growing up. like hayun is truly a terror to behold if she doesnt get what she wants.
Polytrix: *start having to deal with their eldests’ rebellious teen phases*
Celine: Well, glad I don’t have to deal wuth that again.
Hayun, about to have the worst and most nasty teenage rebellion phase she’s seen in a long time:
Rumi may get very jealous and start glaring when she sees Celine holding her younger sisters instead of her, but the moment one of those sisters is placed in her arms, she completely melts. She coos at them, and kisses their cheeks until they yell “Ruruuuuu stopppppp” while giggling, and she puts them on top of her shoulders and runs around so they feel like they’re flying, and carries them under her arms like footballs, and tickles them until they squeal for mercy, and snuggles with them, and watches the dumbest movies and tv shows with them with wrapt interest so they don’t feel like she’s uninterested and get self-conscious, and she sings whatever song they want her to sing no matter how many times they tell her to sing it, and she cried when she heard about their first words even though they had nothing to do with her, and goes to all of their shows and games and events that she can attend, and tells them how amazing she thinks they are whenever she feels like they need to hear it. She absolutely ADORES Hayun and Nayoon.
She doesn’t even really mind when they’re cuddling with Poppy and Miyeong. Or, for that matter, Mira and Zoey, who both of them think of as big sisters, too.
It’s just Celine. Celine was the only person she could call solely Hers for the first 16 years of her life, and she was HER Eomma for the first 31.
And she doesn’t want to deprive them of love. She doesn’t wanna hog Celine to herself. If her younger sisters wanna join them and start a cuddle pile, then she’d absolutely welcome them in. If they feel bad about something, or are hurt or sick, or are scared and they NEED Celine’s comfort, Rumi doesn’t feel that same jealousy when she sees them in her arms.
It’s just hard for her to share that person sometimes.
