Goya’s Third of May, A Story of Salvation

Francisco Goya’s painting, The Third of May displays a grim and weighty scene with a captivating warmth. Painted in 1814, it depicts the mass killings of the Spanish executed by the French. The piece allows one to be a spectator watching in on an intimate piece of history; an anguished man with arms outstretched, soldiers ready to shoot, piles of dead and a line of people waiting to join them. This work by Goya is especially beautiful because of the story of redemption and salvation it tells.

At the focal point of the painting, a man stands on his knees in a pool of blood with his arms stretched above his head. A dark row of soldiers point their guns at him; the man’s face radiates back to them a plea of mercy. His face shows sorrowful anguish over the inhumanity and injustice taking place. He is painted wearing a brilliant white shirt and glowing gold pants, along with a stigmata on his outstretched palm.

The scene takes place underneath a starless inky sky, the only light coming from a large lantern placed in front of the firing squad. The lantern illuminates the man, blanketing him with a holy radiance. The light also reveals the distressed faces of those about to be killed and the corpses of the already dead. The light showcases the innocent and leaves the soldiers to be in the shadows.

The soldiers are depicted as void of individuality. They stand together in the same position, all dressed in the same bleak uniform. They raise their guns in unison with eyes closed and faces pointed to the ground. They push their emotions down, harden their hearts and work to accomplish the task they were ordered to complete.

This painting was sold to Spanish royalty after regaining control and peace over their country. In it, Goya attempts to heal and strengthen his nation; retelling the gruesome piece of their history with God now in the center of it. The divinely dressed and illuminated man takes the place of Christ, with his arms stretched out as if nailed to the cross. He is shown suffering with his people, standing with them and pleading for mercy. The lantern is like the gaze of God looking onto and recognizing the pain of His people. The countenance of the man expresses without words, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Goya proclaims to his nation that God has redeemed and saved them and brought salvation to their country.
