So I have watched it a couple of times and I think I understand it now. Feel free to tell me what you think of my theory.
The video opens with Taylor sitting in a wooded area which represents his unconscious thoughts about her. Which are then showcased through flashbacks about the good, represented through sunshine and smiles etc, and bad times, which is represented by storm clouds and rain, of their relationship. He is literally deciding whether to get back with her or move on throughout the video. Driving the car represents him coming back to her consciously and taking her back into his life by picking her up.
Nature has a lot to do with this video, obviously, and each element represents a part of their relationship. As I have stated before sunshine is linked with good times and storms or rain is linked with troubled times. But there is also a couple more elements to consider as well.
Lightning for one represents two things in the relationship, because that is the context of the whole video, passion and destruction and the color red is also associated with both these emotions. Passion in the literal spark it creates and destruction from it being demonstrated while the "crashing down" is heard throughout the video. Smoke represents burning desires or falling apart in this case it can represent both because of the duality of many elements in the story.
Symbolism is also very important in this video, especially of this kind, and there are several elements that I would like to elaborate on so you can understand how well this video is made and appreciate it even more.
The mirror is an important element because we see it in two states, cracked and fragmented, and each have a meaning. Cracked represents broken or hurt feelings or things will never be the same again. Fragments represent lingering feelings between them.
As stated previously the wooded area represented unconscious thought but there is another location, the beach, which is two-fold in being a reference to the album art and his deciding what to do, facing towards horizon, and returning back to her, facing away. His room represents being locked in his thoughts. The paper plane necklace is a reference to Harry Styles and their relationship which is the whole scope of the video.
In case you missed something I'll give you the simple version which is that everything is happening inside his head.
So that is what I have figured out based off my knowledge of symbolism and the context. (I did have to look up a couple things though)
