Dating App Idea: The Council

Consensus seems to be that the dating apps are not ok.

Perhaps a better designed app might help. So here's my (sadly extremely heteronormative) idea:

When a man matches with a woman, he can be put into a chat, not with her, but with a Council of 3 to 5 of her most trusted advisors. If he can impress them enough that they vote to let him talk to her, he’s in.

Why is this good for women?

I expect women’s experience of using this app would be much better than with most dating apps.

Much less harassment, for one thing. Most harassing or abusive messages would never be sent in the first place, because why would you send that kind of thing to a group-chat of gatekeepers? And if it does happen, facing it as a group makes it much easier to deal with.

The general standard of one on one conversation you experience on the app would be much higher, because you’re never one-on-one with a random guy, you only talk to people who your Council has voted to send on to you. You don't have to deal with a deluge of losers and time wasters, they’re filtered out for you by your Council. In fact I expect most of them would be filtered out even before then, by being unwilling to use this app in the first place.

So, less hassle in the app, talking to higher quality guys, and thus having better dates.

But also, the dates themselves are probably better, even holding the guy constant, because your Council can ask all the questions you'd want answered early on, but which you'd find awkward to ask. You probably don’t get nearly as much information on a first date as you’d like, because, well, you want to go on a date, not conduct a job interview. But first dates often end up being kind of job-interview-y anyway. If your Council conducts the job interview for you ahead of time though, that part is mostly over with before you're even really involved, the guy has already passed the test, and the first date is free to just be a date.

“But I don’t have 3-5 people who I trust / who know me well enough!”

Honestly I would probably try to fix that before trying to date.

Why is this good for men?

Look, if you want to properly date a woman, you're going to have to win over her friends anyway, so you may as well get that out of the way at the start.

Facing down a group of judgemental gatekeepers can be intimidating, but this is easily dealt with by not being a fucking coward. Did you expect to achieve romantic success without risking social discomfort? Faint heart never won fair lady, get in there and prove yourself!

That said, I expect the experience of using the app would actually be more fun and interesting than the average dating app - certainly more exciting, and probably much less corrosive to the soul:

For one, there’s far less ambiguity and uncertainty. You won’t wait hours for a reply, not knowing if she’s ghosted you - there are like 5 people in this group chat, someone will talk to you. You’ll basically never get kinda-ambiguously-pseudo-rejected by The Council - if they vote you down, 3 to 2 or 4 to 1 or unanimously, you know where you stand.

Plus, you’ll get a lot more feedback! The Council has no reason to be afraid to tell you exactly why you didn’t make the cut. The feedback might be hard to hear, but I’d rather have uncomfortable honesty than a blank featureless wall and no guidance on how to improve.

The Council also keeps you from wasting a lot of time on women you’re not compatible with. If the relationship is going to fail, it should fail fast. And this way, it fails before you have a chance to get attached.

And it’s a two way street. There’s a lot of information you can get about a woman through her Council which would be much harder to infer from her dating app profile. If the Council’s questions are all about kids, that tells you something. If the questions are all about your income, that tells you something. If they’re all about your politics, that tells you something. If a woman is looking for something that I’m not, I want to know that as early as possible.

So being rejected by a Council on those kinds of grounds shouldn’t feel too personal. If it’s super important to a woman that you share her politics, and you really don’t, that’s just saved you both a lot of hassle.

"Jesus, I don't want to run a gauntlet and meet a girl's whole social group, I'm just trying to get laid!"

That's ok! This app is not for you.

Why is it good to be on a Council?

Aren’t you tired of your awesome friends, who deserve all the romantic success in the world, making bad choices and dating assholes and losers? Don't you wish you could help them find a suitable boy?

Does it not sound fun to have a group chat where you all judge guys who want to date your friends? Be real, do you not already kind of have one? But what if you could grill those guys yourself? And you don't have to be chill and polite, you can ask the hard questions and make sure your friend doesn't get her time wasted.

Talking to randos on dating apps is not fun. Judging randos with a group of your friends is fun as hell.

Ok, but another dating app? Would it even catch on?

The viral potential is high - each woman who signs up needs to get 3-5 other people to be on her Council. That’s extra friction of course, but it also means 3-5 people will make accounts and be using the app regularly. It's natural that some of them might then want to start using the app for themselves, and appoint their own Council, and so on.

I don’t think it will be at all difficult to persuade people to sign up to sit on a friend’s Council. I’ve been led to believe that friends tend to enjoy hearing about, and involving themselves in, one another’s love life decisions.

And a Council Seat is obviously a position of high esteem, a strong signifier of trust and closeness. People will want to be on their friends' Councils simply for the sake of having been deemed worthy of the role. I imagine there will be considerable interpersonal drama about Council Seat appointments. All of this is excellent for the app's mindshare.

Isn’t this whole idea kind of horrible?

In a way yes, but it’s importantly a very different kind of horrible than the existing dating apps.

A few weeks had passed since you last been at the club with your friend. So much had happened in that one day, it felt like you just rode the craziest roller coaster in the world. After the party, you and your friend spent the rest of the night giggling and fawning over the guy you just met. He wasn’t just some guy though, he was the Veneer.

You laid back in your bed, head softly hitting the pillow behind you as you pick up your phone from the side table. Today was a relaxing day as you didn’t have anything planned for today, so why not just lay back and go on your favorite social media. You clicked on an app and doom scrolled for a little bit. Most of the posts you saw were just of people going crazy about the latest stars and their new albums. You sighed and kept scrolling, not really interested in other people’s “fangirling.”

You stopped on a post that really struck your interest. It was a post of Velvet and Veneer. You didn’t even know they had social media let alone allowed to because of their agencies. You continued watching the video as they were announcing their touring schedule and meet ups. That’s when your brain clicked. You had Veneer’s number.

You got up from bed and scurried to your dresser, opening up a drawer and picking up the crumbled piece of paper that had his contact information. You took in a deep breath as you opened up the message app on your phone and dialed in his number. You decided to keep it simple and type in a little “Hey, its [_____]”

You dropped your phone on top of your dresser and paced around your room, anxiety getting the best of you. You didn’t know why you were so nervous, it was one simple text. You felt like you were about to pass out until you heard a buzz. You ran over to your phone and read the message.

“Oh hey! I didn’t think you were actually gonna send a text. Had me worried lol.” He sent a little laugh emoji next to his message.

You sighed deeply, all the worry draining from your body as you sent him a reply.

“Heh yeah, I eventually gained the courage lol”

You slightly cringed at the text as you sent it. You waited a couple of minutes for a response until you heard the vibration coming from your phone. He was trying to call you. You panicked and quickly picked up the phone.

“Hey sorry for the incoming call. It’s so much easier just to talk than having to type out everything. How were you lately?” He asked.

“Oh I’ve been good, just relaxing at home and sometimes going out everyone once in a while.” You sighed and smiled. You were nervous and excited all at once, you just hoped he couldn’t hear any of it.

“I wanted to invite you over to one of our meet and greets at the Rage Dome tomorrow, do you think you’ll be able to make it?” He questioned.

You quickly looked at the calendar you had hanging up on your wall. It’s not like you had anything planned but you liked to check.

“Nope! I should be free tomorrow.” You said, a little bit of your excitement coming out.

“Great, can’t wait to see you there.” He softly laughed at your excitement, making you fluster.

“Ugh, crimp is pestering at the moment. I’ll call you back when I can, bye.” He dragged out the bye and hung up. You sighed and laid back on top of your bed. You really were down bad for this guy.

The next day rolls around and you slowly get up and stretch. You smiled to yourself, remembering that you get to see him today. You get up to go take a shower and fix your hair. You set the shower to be a nice warm temp and started stripping. You hopped in and quickly cleaned yourself, not wanting to spend forever in the shower. You quickly got out and got dressed, picking out your best formal outfit you can find. Yes, it is a meet and greet but you still wanted to look good for him.

You finished up your final touches when your phone started vibrating again. You picked up your phone and answered the call.

“How is my number one fan doing this fine morning?” He laughed. You laughed with him.

“I’m doing good, just finished getting ready for the day. How about you?” You asked, leaving the bathroom and sitting down on your bed.

“I’m doing alright. Honestly, I am way too tired to be getting ready right now but what can I say. Crimps already all up in my hair about the meet and greet. I don’t know why she’s so worried, the meet and greet doesn’t start until six.” He groaned. You can practically hear him roll his eyes at the end of his sentence.

“Well, I wish you luck.” You said softly.

“Thank you.” He paused for a moment until he continued. “What if you come an hour earlier so we can meet up beforehand? In private.”

You flustered a dark red. There was no way he just asked you to meet up IN PRIVATE.

“Uh yeah that would be great!” Your voice almost trembled because of your nerves. There is no way that this was actually happening.

“Great, I’ll see you at five.” He hung up. You sat at your bed, shocked. You slowly went downstairs and went into your living room, filling in time until it was ready to go.

You stepped inside the Rage Dome and were almost blinded by all the lights they had going on. You were about to pull out your phone until you saw someone approaching you.

“Hey you made it!” Veneer cheered, spreading out his arms to wrap you into a hug.

“Yeah, I was just about to ask you where to go.” You chuckled and so did he.

“Let’s go on back to my break room. I don’t want anyone seeing us out here. I’m not ready for all the paparazzi.” He shuttered sarcastically.

He walked you back to where all the breakrooms were. The rooms were for the celebrities to take breaks in, just in case they needed to fix their appearance or if the crowd was being too much. Once you walked in you noticed that Velvet wasn’t there.

“Where’s Velvet?” You asked, scanning the room.

“Oh she’s getting ready in another room. They gave us separate rooms which I kind of enjoy.” He smiled and looked at you.

“Can I just say something real quick? Your outfit is gorgeous.” He complimented. You smiled, blushing a little.

“Thank you, I didn’t think you would care that much.” You said with an awkward smile.

“It looks really good on you.” He stared into your eyes. You felt like you were about to explode with how close you too were. He slightly pulled you over to the couch and sat you down, him sitting right next to you.

He gently touched the side of your face with his hand, still staring longingly into your eyes. He slightly looked down at your lips and back up again before asking something.

“Can I..” He spoke hesitantly, leaning closer. You followed his actions and leaned in. He brushed a piece of hair back behind your ear and quickly closed the gap between you two. Your eyes fluttered closed as you two both enjoyed each other’s presence.

You wrapped your arms around him, your hand slowly moving through his hair. He deepened the kiss, his other hand grabbing your hips and moving you closer. He pulled back for a quick second to give you guys some time to breathe. His hair was a mess and his eyes were half-lidded. He was breathing heavily. You took in the sight, making sure to keep it ingrained in your memory.

“That was…” He looked down into your gaze. You smiled slightly and pulled him back in for another kiss. You laid down on the couch, wrapping your arms around his neck and pulling him on top. You continued making out for what felt like forever until you heard some foot steps from down the hall. You guys hurriedly got up and brushed yourself off, making sure it looked like nothing happened.

You were just about to walk out the door before Veneer put his hand on your shoulder.

“We can…keep this….as our little secret.”

Ooh!! Sorry it took a while for me to reply to this! If I were to distill the biggest lessons I learnt throughout the journey of writing CT:OS and Merry Crisis, it would be:

Just start! It's easy to feel like we aren't good enough yet or need to do more research or get better or work out more of the plot etc but I think everything can be figured out along the way, and we get better as we write, and it's always super motivating to make something, no matter how small or bad we think it is!

Keep the scope small. Related to the earlier point, I think it's tempting to do something that's super ambitious, and we start every project with fiery optimism, trying to do too much, trying to perfect the writing etc., trying to implement cool features and customizability but I am a firm believer that good enough and completed is better than perfect and unfinished! And as we write, things often end up ballooning in scope and effort required anyway, so starting with what we think is the bare minimum already ends up being more than enough to chew on! I have a backlog of 'good-to-haves' that I'll go back to once I have a minimum viable product, and I find that helps me maintain forward writing momentum.

Set aside protected time to write, and use tools to avoid multitasking and distractions. It's easy to let the day get away from us if we don't block out chunks of time to write. When we make it a routine rather than let it be dependent solely on passion or interest, I find it easier to make actual, steady progress! Also, I really like the pomodoro / focus tools that refuse to let me use messaging apps or the internet when I'm writing. I find that it makes me way more productive when I do sit down to write.

Break the story into manageable chunks! Read some plot structure guides (eg. save the cat, hero's journey) and use that to write a brief outline (which can and will change over time, but that's okay)! I find that this really helps make a large project feel less overwhelming. Usually I focus on 1 chapter a month and break it into 3-4 major scenes in that chapter, and tackle a scene per week which makes it easier to know what I'm supposed to be doing every day and reduce the friction of starting.

Imagine why every scene could be someone's favorite scene. I heard this piece of advice from Jed Herne's podcast, and thought it was great! It helps us conceptualize every scene as being special, and avoid having too many filler scenes. If I really struggle to imagine how the scene is going to be someone's favorite scene, no matter how small the reason (e.g. development in a relationship dynamic, change in the MC's worldview), I ask myself whether the scene should even be in the IF at all. Perhaps it could be replaced by a 2 or 3 sentence time skip/description instead. If you don't find a way to make the scene feel significant while writing it, players will likely also find it a slog to get through.

Kill your darlings. A cliched piece of advice, but one I live by! Don't be afraid to cut out whole chunks that don't work/don't further the plot. I believe removing mediocre scenes always does more good than leaving them in. It just takes 5 minutes for someone to think "nah, I'm tapping out" and nothing kills immersion like a badly-written scene. If you find a way to salvage it / make the scene worth leaving in, then you can always add it back later. I have a graveyard of scenes that I took out. It's often less painful to save those words in a file somewhere and tell yourself that they can be repurposed for future scenes.

And most of all, just keep writing! :)

His brain needs routine and consistency. So getting up at the same time every day, even if he doesn't have to go to work, is his best bet. He wants to think it will be easier when he has to go back to work, and he doesn't have so many hours to fill, but the stress of the job might be counterproductive. 

Buck’s body is stiff as he rolls out of bed and trudges to the bathroom. He catches a glimpse of himself in the mirror and feels like he's looking at a stranger. 

He's changed and he knows that. He's put on a bit of weight; between coming off opiates and a complete reduction of physical activity he does from day to day, this wasn't surprising. He anticipates he'll get back into shape pretty easily, but it's still  making him feel a bit insecure. On top of that, he just looks rough. The dark bags under his eyes seem to be a permanent fixture now, probably thanks to the insomnia. And although he spotted gray hairs here and there before New Mexico, he thinks they're multiplying faster now.  He looks older and sadder and less like himself than he has a handle on. At least that's how it feels.

On some level, he knows it shouldn't matter. Hard times take a hard toll on your body. Buck should just be grateful. He's come out relatively unscathed, in terms of physical damage to his body. Who knows what else could have happened, either in New Mexico or as a result of the drug use after? He's alive, he's here, and he just has to focus on making it through today. He just wishes he recognized his reflection while doing that.

After he's done in the bathroom, Buck opens his phone and looks at his notes app. He has a running list of all the things he needs to do.

you broke the kiss just to catch your breath and in that moment you realised in what kind of weird position you got yourself into.

“so?” she asked you, breathing.
