hi maddie! i was wondering, what are your favorite video games? (and which would you recommend to someone who doesn't play a whole lot but is into fantasy & good stories?) thank you! xx
i’ve been like. so into video games lately they just make me feel good. i tend to play newer games, like ones made after 2007, just because i’m about as useless with old video games as i am with old movies. in the last year? i think i tripled the amount of games i’d played to date and it has been a lot of fun.
my favourite video game series is uncharted, closely followed by dishonored. both are closed world linear games, so you play through a set storyline. dishonored is more flexible, because while you still have set objectives, there are many different ways you can achieve them based on your play style.
so!!!!!!!!! dishonored!!!!!!!!!! i love so fucking much. the world building is fucking neat like you can see it is loosely based on our world but it’s got supernatural elements and magical abilities and machinery that’s very reminiscent of steampunk and the industrial revolution. first game is centred around corvo attano, who has been framed for the murder of the empress, and what he has to do to get her daughter reinstated on the throne, and during that time he’s gifted abilities by the outsider, a god of sorts who just hangs around watching humans. it is first person which was ugh for me at first because i’d never played it before, but you can get the hang of it easily.
uncharted’s more like… there’s one path and you have to find it. but the environments they’ve created are incredible and beautiful, so it’s no hardship. the characters are probably the strongest part (for me) and the way they’re integral to the story. the loose concept is nate drake seeks some long lost treasure (like el dorado) and goes in search of it, obviously meets resistance both from other people looking for it and also the defense mechanisms surrounding the treasure itself. very much a puzzle solving, running around different locations to figure out where to go next, having to take out nameless bad guy armies sort of game. the original trilogy has been remastered for the ps4 as well so you can smack all five out in one go.
i’m also highly in love with dragon age. so there’s three games, origins, ii and inquisiton all set in the same universe, thedas, which if you like fantasy you should like. it’s just a neat world!!!!!!!! and you get to create your own character and have romances with supporting characters, which is undeniably the best part. and the way you create your character, like race, class, status, affects interactions within the game and also the way you play (like, if you like ranged fighting, go for a mage or an archer, if you like melee, go for a warrior). your dialogue choices affect how the person you’re speaking to feels about you/how you want any given situation to go down.
inquisition is My Game, if only because i haven’t played ii, and i started playing origins but had a hard time (it’s old and i can’t handle it). the cool thing about inquisiton is it’s open world, so while there is a “main plot” that you can to do, there’s also many many side stories, and you can do them in whatever order you like. it’s very fetch-quest based, like you get a quest, you complete it, you come back to your home base, rinse and repeat. there’s a lot of them that don’t go anywhere, whereas in the other two, there’s always a purpose. still, i very much like running around different regions collecting artifacts, so that suited me. it’s very easy to spend a lot of time on, just pleasantly immersed in thedas as a country. and you also get to do quests specifically for your companions, which increases your friend level and then you can roooooomance them.
i also played the assassin’s creed games in the last year (loved them) which is basically, you’re a fictional assassin immersed in a real period of history, interacting with real people and affecting real life events. they really give you a look into those periods because they’re pretty decently researched, and also most of the assassins themselves are interesting nuanced characters. the first one was released in 2007, but the game that put them on the map was assassin’s creed ii, with ezio auditore, set in renaissance italy. there is a linear main plot in these games as well (and they’re very good), but sometimes you can accept additional quests to help people.
so those are my favourite games, and i’ve only really played tomb raider (both the old and the reboot) and fallout: new vegas beyond that (both great games, i’m just not as passionate about them it seems). i know people who like skyrim and the witcher 3 which are both open world role-playing fantasy games that have like. acclaim. what i love about the above games is really the characters and the story, less so the gameplay (although dishonored’s gameplay and art style are good enough to rate) so hopefully you might find the same based on what you choose. good luck and come chat to me about them anytime!!!
