Phantom Illusions Sonic Forces Au

ALRIGHT. This I can rant about for a hot second.
So, this au takes place before forces even starts. Possibly, half a year before forces starts, there’s a huge explosion at one of Eggman’s bases and the man just goes missing. No one is sure what happened to him nor where he went, Sonic and the group are on alert but eventually calm down around a month later assuming that perhaps whatever plan Eggman was working on just backfired and he’s nursing his wounds.
But then people start to go missing, like- a LOT of people start to go missing. Humans and Mobians, and it’s causing a lot of people to panic, and honestly things don’t seem to be getting better, nor is anyone being found.
G.U.N. gets involved and sends Team Dark out on a mission, but Rouge ends up going missing as well during it. Shadow and Omega start looking on their own, desperate to find it, but things don't stop there.
Vanilla, Jet and Espio go missing as well. Which alerts the main group to just how big this problem has become, and how dangerous it’s getting. Tails goes missing as well at one point, which triggers a pretty bad breakdown for Sonic. Who just let his brother slip out from under his eye because he left to look around for one day. A buddy system is set up to try to keep this from happening again, but things don’t go completely to plan.
Things go wrong after the group tries to investigate more which leads to Amy going missing next, her house completely ransacked as well.
Sonic has Knuckles handcuffed to him, Vector is taking care of Charmy and Cream without Espio’s help, the Babylons are all but disbanded, and Shadow and Omega are just MIA in the moment.
Until they finally get SOME good news, one of the missing people has been found. It wasn’t anyone they knew, but it was still someone, Shadow had managed to find them wandering around in the middle of nowhere, and brought them back to G.U.N. for questioning.
The Mobian was- fine, but he wasn’t at all aware of what was happening, just wandering around, talking to no one, and not seeing anyone around him.
G.U.N. found out through some tests that the mobian had something lodged in his head, partially sticking out. So they surgically removed what appeared to be a black and red stone, and after it was out the man snapped back to being lucid. But also subsequently had a mental breakdown because he was begging for his wife and daughter, which from records of the mans life, he never had.
It’s also discovered soon after from Vector trying to get in contact with Mighty that he was missing too, and it was just Ray. So the ever shrinking group of Sonic, Knuckles and Vector head out to grab Ray and make sure he doesn’t go missing as well- as well as figure out what’s happening and find everyone before it’s too late.
