What are the dragon species?
To clarify since my terminology can be a bit confusing, Draconics is the term I use to refer to any dragon-like being that originated from humans.
When I mention dragons, I’m talking specifically about the race of humans who originate from a different set of islands, got turned into dragons (4 legs, 2 wings) and then migrated over to the current island that the story takes place.
With that being said, let’s go over the 8 dragon species, and also their demigod with a brief description of each! This list will not include the Draconic hybrids involving dragons, because that would be wayyy too many. Just know that each of the 8 base species can breed with each other to create a hybrid that takes on mixed traits from both species.
I’ll include pictures/art where I can, although a lot of these are in the middle of being redesigned or updated to my new style so the art style might change :,D
Aroarus (Ah-Roar-Us), Draconis Classification
These guys can breath fire, a rare ability among my dragons! Though they mostly prefer to light themselves on fire instead, they do this through the flammable sweat they secrete through their paws and false outer fangs.
SplitJaw, Draconis Classification
Has two sub species: CastGloom & ShockWave
These shadowy dragons use their dark scales, almost black in color though often just a very deep purple (though they can be other colors), to literally disappear into dark spaces. They enter a realm known as The Inbetween, where they can travel and reappear anywhere another shadow is as far as their magic can take them.
*The Individual is depicted is a hybrid, CastGlooms do not naturally have a stinger/barbed tail.
Heavily based on crocodilians, these guys lurk in the murky inland waters of the island. They use their specially adapted whiskers and beak to find prey using little electrical pulses! Careful though, they can use it for much more than just that. Step too close, and you’ll be in for a rude awakening with the full force of their static electricity.
Shiver, Draconis Classification
These guys act more like the dragons of traditional mythos, loving to steal and hoard shiny metal objects in order to decorate their caves and nests so they can intimidate others of their species. Highly territorial, so despite being the smallest Draconic species on the island they have the fire power to back it up! They spit the hottest flame, thanks to their diet of minerals and fish. They even have a jaw like a pelican, made of leathery skin to better adapt to their hot fire!
Armour, Callus Classification
Moving from the smallest to the biggest, these gentle giants actually are best off in their diet of rotting plant materials and rocks. With horns, faces, and bodies covered in layers of steel-like metal scales, they aren’t the best fliers put certainly pack a punch when they start charging straight at whatever is bothering them. The last of the fire breathers, these guys spit gassy fireballs with limited shots.
Venjin (Ven-Gin), Callus Classification
A personal favorite of mine in terms of design, these guys have loose scales all over their body that they rattle against each other to create a deafening “roar!” Though that’s not their only manner of defense. Kleptoparasites by nature, they have venom in both their fangs and tail that rots flesh while still attached to a beating heart. They use their size and flashy nature to scare dragons off half eaten bodies, even if it’s rotting!
Anjir (And-Jur), Conqueris Classification
The second smallest species, these guys hunt in groups of many! They’ll adopt any dragon into their flock if they’re helpful to the hunt. Their primary diet is blood and bones, but they also eat a ton of mushrooms and seaweed so they can produce a noxious gas under the jewel-like scales in their face. Depending on their exact diet, the gas has different effects and can even be flammable!
Clove, Conqueris Classification
Dragons who exhibit deep connection to the magic unique to the island, their colors are influenced by the time in the year they’re born! Waxing and waning in the deepness of their green, with the deeper the color said to be linked to the dragon’s control of their magic. However, if one is lucky enough to be born under the full moon, then their scales will turn the color of the moon based on the season! White, Rose, Gold, or Amber. It’s rare to see these dragons outside of the DauntingStream kingdom, but they are respected by the most religious of the dragons like priests almost.
The Gias, Demigod Classification (Mixed)
The Gias is a more-so genetic mutation rather than a specific species, but is viewed as a demigod in to the dragons! The Gias' job is to travel the island balancing the magic levels by absorbing excess and redistributing it. When this isn't done, sickness is incredibly common. Specifically Blackscale and Maldecario (Both fictional illnesses). Only one Gias can exist at a time, supposedly at least. This puts a strain on the island as of now, as currently The Gias is a dragon known as Zephra, who is also a bilateral gynandromorph as seen in the picture below.
