9. first kisses

Val and Pedro’s first kiss took place–perhaps most ironically–at the tender age of twelve, in front of the giant pacific octopus, the most famous member of the Baltimore Aquarium’s Surviving through Adaptation exhibit.

It was quick, and brief, banging noses against each other in the way only kids manage to do, but mostly, it was just theirs.

Their second kiss was alcohol-induced and at a party towards the end of Season 1– illuminated by a setting sun they don’t know they’re seeing for one of the last times.

They stopped counting after that, but there a few other notable ones Val can think of– when she first left for Colorado, at yet another Chiclawgo party in Season 10 with the weight of ascension hanging overhead, the sweetest reunion they could have asked for after descension.

So when he kisses him one last time–in the heat of a Hawai’i afternoon, another stolen moment–they try to savour it. It’s all she can do, really.
