My mom and I have concluded that awareness days do nothing for diseases that actually NEED awareness - as in diseases you actually weren't aware of. Like, if it doesn't kill you, awareness days/months do shit. If you can potentially die from it, products are sold left and right and celebrities are doing commercials for it. We were talking about this in terms of PCOS. I'll bet you, if you ask someone if they knew September was PCOS Awareness Month, they'd look at you sideways. Fuck, they'd ask you what the hell PCOS is - it gets so little attention. It's difficult as all hell to have babies, but will it kill you? No, so who cares? What I want to know is where were those celebrity-endorsed commercials for PCOS this September? What celebrity talked about their mom or sister, who had incredible difficulty conceiving her baby because PCOS made her cycles irregular or non-existent? Actually no - it does get recognition. It gets recognition on TV shows highlighting women who did not know they were pregnant because they had PCOS. PCOS comes up a lot there, but those women get made fun of. How could you not know you were pregnant, they ask. Because a woman's reproductive system never has problems, right? Because everything goes according to plan, right? It just all makes me so livid.
