Being questioned by someone wanting to get into EMS really makes you think about your career choice. Question 1) what can I expect? Answer 1) expect to be challenged intellectually, emotionally and physically. Expect to not have a regular sleep schedule. Also expect a lot of time away from your loved ones to help someone else’s. Better question is what you shouldn’t expect, don’t expect everything to go your way, don’t expect anything to be like your textbook, and do not expect a lot of thanks. Question 2) do you think I can handle all of the blood and guts? Answer 2) there is a lot less blood and guts than you think. You’re way more likely to get vomit or urine on you than you are blood. There is a lot of hand holding, comforting, and reassuring. The blood and guts is easy compared to dealing with human emotions. Question (not my favorite) 3) so what is the worst thing you’ve ever seen? Answer 3) although it’s human nature to be curious about these things, do not ask this question. I understand you are trying to learn but there are things that some people try to forget, things we don’t like to talk about. So unless the Information is given up willingly, just do not ask. Question 4) is it worth it? Answer 4) yes. It is. Simple as that. I love my job.
