December prompts - day 19 (apron)

“Twy, you didn’t have to get me anything!” Alexis says as she reaches excitedly for the beautifully wrapped gift Twyla is holding, still standing in the doorway.

“Of course I did, Alexis. Besides, it’s relevant to the day,” Twyla explains, following Alexis inside her tiny New York apartment, luggage trailing behind her and a tote bag full of groceries - all from the baking aisle - hanging from her arm that had also held the gift. She smiles at Alexis’ joy, not at all offended by her lack of invitation inside or even an offer to help with the bags.

This is why she hopped on a plane during peak travel season, after all, to spend time with her friend and maybe see if there could be something more there.

There was certainly something more there for Twyla.

She sets her luggage down beside the couch Alexis is already seated on, and the groceries on the coffee table, taking a seat beside her. It’s more of a loveseat than a couch, appropriately sized for the apartment, and perfect for Twyla to sit close to Alexis without being too obvious about her crush.

“Open it!” 

Alexis doesn’t hesitate. “An… apron?”

She looks confused. Not impressed. This was a bad idea, of course Alexis would be expecting something more glamorous than an apron, with a cheesy Christmas themed print. Especially now that she knew about Twyla’s money. She had been foolish to think Alexis would be charmed, that she might fall into her arms and proclaim her love because of a silly apron.

“It’s dumb, it’s just, I have the same one and I thought we could have matching aprons for our Christmas treat baking day,” Twyla explains, blushing.

“Ooh! Twy, I love it! We can be little baking twinsies!” She exclaims, holding the apron up to herself with a sparkle in her eyes.

“Exactly. Merry Christmas, Alexis. Now, show me to your kitchen.”
