This was not at all how he’d planned for things to go. With the victory of the last battle he’d been informed that marriage arrangements would finally be settled when he returned. He’d been filled with excited anticipation until he’d learned to whom he’d been betrothed. It was a smart match and he knew he should’ve been pleased. She was a beautiful, fierce, and capable warrior. But he had known her since she was small. Her brothers, and thus she also, felt more like kin than someone he should be marrying. Nevertheless, the wedding was going ahead.
Upon his return he had hoped for a chance to talk to her privately but the chance had never come. They had been separated in order to take part in the pre-wedding rituals. He did his best to try to give in to the feelings of merriment that should’ve surrounded the wedding but he had difficulty shaking the feeling of uncertainty too. Maybe this was normal. All the wondering and unknown of the other’s expectations. All he could garner was the information from her brothers. Her heart certainly did not belong to him. But this was an arrangement out of duty and necessity for the clan not for love. Maybe that would come. Maybe not.
It was impossible to get a quiet word into one another once the day had begun. Save for the exchange of vows, it had been difficult to speak to one another at all. Their families both had much love for one another so it was hard to ignore the joyous tone set by the group. And the copious amounts of mead that flowed helped settle some nerves and improve the mood as well.
He shoved the bedroom door closed in the face of the merry revellers and finally they were alone. Quinn let out a heavy sigh suddenly struck silent, unsure of what to say to her now that he actually had the chance. He studied her carefully trying to read her as best he could. It had been awhile since he’d last seen her but they had shared many jokes and bantered back and forth with one another through the years. But now everything was different and he didn’t know where to begin. He moved to where a jug of mead and cups had been left for them. Maybe another drink would help. Quietly he poured and turned to her to offer her out a cup. “Did you enjoy the festivities?” He asked uncertainly.
