Taking Back Girls #4
Oh Internet, I am really starting to be concerned with your language comprehension skills. Very luckily for you, I am a trained professional.
Please join me on my odyssey. A couple of days back I was listening to Bill Gifford interviewed on Fresh Air promoting this book:
He seemed to be asserting that the bio-identical hormone replacement therapy touted by Suzanne Somers and others has potential for long term harm. I admit I only caught half the program while eating lunch; I did a little research and realized that I was unable to sustain my attention to the subject of menopause (I'm kind of an in-the-moment type person, although that moment is certainly fast approaching).
What did manage to engage me was this idea of a judgement being placed on how we grow old: fighting tooth and nail, or as is commonly dubbed in the media "with grace."
I googled Suzanne Somers.
She made menopause seem riveting.
I then started thinking about women celebrities who make getting older seem badass. The most obvious came to mind.
As I looked at websites about these women, one phrase kept popping up, "aging gracefully."
So I decided to invent a really fun new game. It's called "Would that be said about a man?" Who else to ask but Google? My search: "Celebrity men aging gracefully."
Here is a breakdown of the first page:
1. Three sites with general lists of "gracefully aging celebrities" with the following percentages of actual MEN:
26%
20%
38%.
2. Three sites that just featured women.
3. Two sites about this guy.
So the Internet is once again REMARKABLY CONFUSED.
Guess aging gracefully is something else I need to put on my to-do list. Along with figuring out the whole menopause thing.
