Stop telling me to stop being angry. Let's talk about slur reclamation, shall we? Today I was faced with someone who believes having a learning disability & neurodivergence means it's okay for her to call people she doesn't agree with "r*tards." So, let's talk about this. What is a slur? A slur is a word or phrase used against minority & marginalized groups, usually by oppressors. Slur reclamation happens when a member or a group of members decides to adopt the slur and use it for themselves, thus deflating the power of the slur. It is only for the marginalized people to use for themselves IF they decide to use it. For example: I am physically disabled. Physically disabled people are marginalized. We have long been the target of eugenics (approximately 200,000 physically & mentally disabled people were murdered under Hitler's rein), ridicule, harassment, murder, all that good stuff. "Cripple" is a slur used against the physically disabled. I have reclaimed that slur. When I post a picture of myself in which you can see a mobility aid of mine (cane, rollator, wheelchair), I often use the #cripplepunk hashtag. I do NOT use the word to describe anyone besides myself, and I certainly do not use it to insult other people. I hope everyone who doesn't quite understand this will be willing to do some more research on the topic. I also would like to hear from other people who have reclaimed slurs, if you wish to share your experience. #stoptellingmetostopbeingangry #politics #twslur #twslurs #letstalkpolitics #treatingpeoplewithrespect #notadifficultconcept #thisisexhausting #ipromisedtospeakup #iwillkeepspeakingup
