Facing Wellington Church, and with Glasgow University in the background, is the Round Reading Room, captured in evening light yesterday. The circular domed building is meant to be a modern interpretation of the Pantheon in Rome. Built in 1939, the A-listed building was recognised as one of the best buildings erected in Scotland during 1936-1949. Designed by Harold Hughes and David Stark Reid Waugh. I remember that whispers used to bounce round the wall and easily be heard on the far side of the room. Golden temple; but Glasgow, not Athens. Just as the lights come on in early evening, Wellington Church looks its best. Its neoclassical portico and Corinthian columns are in the style of an ancient Graecian temple. This neoclassical architecture was favoured by the United Presbyterian Church, in contrast to the gothic revival typical of Victorian churches and of Glasgow University, which it sits opposite. Surprisingly, the architect was not Alexander "Greek" Thomson who designed many other buildings in Glasgow's West End and whose bicentenary is next month.
