8. Elderly and disabled food stamp recipients get $4.30 A DAY FOR FOOD.
Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) has dropped significantly over the past 15 years, serving only about a quarter of the families in poverty, and paying less than $400 per month for a family of three for housing and other necessities. Ninety percent of the available benefits go to the elderly, the disabled, or working households.
Food stamp recipients get $4.30 a day.
I found this on thisiswealthyprivilege, and I just want to say one quick thing about it: TANF is not food stamps! Food stamps are handled by a program called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). A family of two with one person working 30 hours a week usually qualify for roughly $300 a month. TANF is (as it says in the name) a TEMPORARY assistance program that is centered around helping people get on their feet and find employment. In 2010, the percentage of TANF adults over the age of 39 was only 15.4%. Compare that to the amount of adults 20-29, which was 51.3%. Also, that 90% you're thinking of is for the total amount of people receiving any kind of government assistance, not TANF specifically. In fact, as far as I can find, TANF only assists the elderly if the elderly person in question is supporting a minor grandchild. This is because the program is designed to help people already in the workforce or who need help returning to the workforce.

I find most of the posts on thisiswealthyprivilege are just angry rants born out of jealousy, rather than anything genuine.
Wealthy privilege is lying about your economic status on the internet to get sympathy and money from impressionable young people who are probably actually less well off than you are, so you can buy the latest games consoles and attend a prestigious art school (even though you claim to be a journalist). Wealthy privilege is using the lie about you being poor to appear less privileged, because without it you're just a white, cis, heterosexual woman.

I was inspired to start this blog after seeing thisiswealthyprivilege. To be honest, I hated it. It seemed to be just a platform for whining and complaining. This is a place to change, grow, and get better.
First of all, I want to address something right away: this is for everyone. There is no poor enough, broke enough, frugal enough, etc. This is just for people looking to cut back, better live within their means, or who have financial problems.
I do not want to see any complaining about people saving for frivolous things when others are struggling to make rent. We all want more than we have and we all need to stretch our dollars.
I also want a supportive environment. We're here to better ourselves, and there's no limit to that.
Obviously things like "Go to Florida instead of Cancun for vacation" are not top priority in terms of posting, but "Dunkin Doughnuts is a little cheaper than Starbucks" is a completely legitimate even though some of us can't afford a morning coffee.
There may also be a portion of "Not worth it" changes. This might be something like... buy cheap shoes that last for 3 months rather than expensive shoes that last for 3 years.
This is going to be VERY user driven. So feel free to submit any questions, tricks, or tips you might have.
