We worked in Spiddal house April to June, and sometimes it was cold. Anto Thistlethwaite bought himself a sweater in a strange and ancient woollen store called Taaffe's on Galway's Shop Street*.  The paint on the storefront was worn, the sign archaic, and the inside was dark and stygian.  The wares were laid out on benches.  It looked like it hadn't been refurbished or restocked since the late 1940s.   We weren't the only cosmonauts passing through the west of Ireland to notice this delicious curiosity.  Niall Williams, in his novel Four Letters Of Love, has his heroine work for a while in a Galway shop exactly matching Taaffe's.  Taaffe's closed in the 1990s and has been boarded up since.  A couple of years ago the town hoisted a gaudy "Tall Ships" poster over its front.

* I have written elsewhere about Galway's pleasingly no-nonsense street names.  Middle Street and Cross Street are two more.
