Playbill did a bit of a writeup for The Play What I Wrote.
Comedic take on Cervantes' classic tome starring Sylvester McCoy as Don Quixote.
Relistening to this having read a (highly abridged) version of the two books last year I found in Oxfam and I am now in a position to appreciate how little they changed it...like yes, Sancho literally does just leave his family to be Don Quixote's squire. The adaption adds some silly voices (the priest being a particularly good one..."they have a priest-conception of me") and jokes and made some scenes less serious with character motivations more flippant (and Sancho reacts appropriately upon discovering someone wrote a book about things that happened when he and Don Quixote were alone).
"[the windmill adventure] is the most well known not because it is particularly exciting but because it is the first one and most people don't get very far through the book" is exactly the idea my housemate had as I gave her daily updates every morning while I was reading it.
"they had many such adventures, each more similar than the last" SO TRUE that is NOT a castle it is an INN for the third time in a row and that was in an abridged version so I shudder to think how many times it happened in the full text.
"this is all in the book so please don't write in" not about Don Quixote being honour-bound by the knights' code to whip Sancho on the buttocks hundreds of times but it could have been.
Horrible Histories S06 (2016) - ‘Sensational Shakespeare’ Special
not a traditional double act (26/53)
Haunting of MR James- Radio 4 went a bit overboard with the idea of “Christmas ghost story” this past Christmas: as well as ten adaptions of MR James stories, there was also this original new drama written by Mark Gatiss, which is a sort of embellished biopic of MR James. I’m not sure how true to life the events are, but in the drama they’re shown as directly inspiring James in terms of the content of his stories. The drama focuses on James’ time at Cambridge, and how he was affected by the death of one of the students he was responsible for and consequent mental illness of another. This is part 2. Part 1 here. Just under 43 minutes. Tw mental illness.
Le Carre on Spying- a comedy drama by The Penny Dreadfuls, in which the spy thriller author John Le Carre is himself a spy, and becomes involved in a plot to assassinate John F Kennedy on his upcoming visit to Berlin. This is part 1 (the majority of the programme). 50 minutes.
For those of you who reside in the UK, you might want to check out the above opportunity to see a recording. It not only features the lovely Margaret, but also Amanda Abbington (ie Mary from BBC Sherlock), and Sylvester McCoy (ie the Seventh Doctor). If David Reed’s name is familiar to any of you, it should be if you listened to the absolutely cracking Angstrom that aired earlier this year, as he voiced a few characters.
If you’re able to attend the recording THIS Sunday (8 July), click here to apply for tickets.
Good luck to those who apply!
