The allegory of Fortune (Fortuna) and the Good Genius of Rome represents the Roman belief in the fickle nature of luck and the necessity of divine or inherent favor to secure prosperity and success for the state. While Fortuna embodied random chance, the "Good Genius" (Genius Publicus or Genio Populi Romani) was the protective spirit or inherent virtue ensuring the stability and success of Rome
