Thomas Newcomen – Scientist of the Day

Thomas Newcomen, an English journeyman ironworker and inventor, died Aug. 5, 1729, at the age of 66; his date of birth is unknown.

Much of what has been written is curiously impersonal and therefore unreal. It is as though the technologies were developed by a Deus Ex Machina, or by a corporate act representing the will of a whole people. Between 1760 and 1860, a small group of men transformed the face of England, and brought about an economic and social upheaval so vast that the life of no person in this country remained unaffected by it. They set in motion a process of rapid evolution which, spreading round the world, created international problems with which we are still vainly grappling.

16. yüzyıldan başlayarak Avrupa’nın nüfusu hızla artmış, tarımdaki gelişmeler bu sektördeki nüfus ihtiyacını azaltarak fazlalığın kentlere göç etmesine neden olmuştu. Nitekim bunlar, sanayi için gereken hazır iş gücünü oluşturacaktı. Bu arada yaşam düzeyi de yükselmişti. Tüketim mallarına olan talep de bununla birlikte artmıştı.

Tüketim, Sanayi Devrimi ile birlikte modern dünyanın motoru olacaktı. Tabii ki sömürgeciliği de unutmamak lazım! Avrupa ülkeleri yeni koloniler oluşturarak, buradan getirdikleri malları kendi sanayilerinde işliyor ve tekrar sömürgelerine satıyorlardı. Bir nevi, sömürgelerin zenginliği üzerinden karşılıksız para basıyor gibiydiler! Bu süreçte, orta sınıfın zenginleşmesine paralel olarak kapital birikim oluşmaya başladı. Bilinen anlamıyla kapitalizm kavramı ete kemiğe bürünmeye başlamıştı. Böylece yeni yatırım alanları aranmaya başlandı.

Buhar motoru, Sanayi Devrimi’nde başrol oynadı. Sanayi devrimi sırasında, bazı endüstriler halen rüzgâr, at ve su gücüne dayanan ya da insan gücüyle çalışan küçük makinelerle üretim yapıyorlardı. Thomas Newcomen tarafından icat edilen buhar motoru, ilk olarak maden ocaklarında veya su pompalayarak değirmendeki döngüyü devam ettirme işlemleri için kullanıldı. Motorlar artık değişen ihtiyaçlara göre, değişen şekillerde üretilmeye başlanmıştı. Lokomotifler, buharlı gemiler sahnedeki yerini alıyor, ulaşım patlaması yaşanıyordu.

jekyll and hyde headcanons bc I've been neglecting tumblr

i dont have any art to show, but I do have some headcanons :D

📌jekyll has his fuckass loose strand of hair on his forehead in Immitaton of lanyon. When they were in uni, jekyll asked why Lanyon kept a stand of hair loose when it could easily be slicked back. Lanyon revealed that he did it on purpose, because he uses it as a conversation starter. It went something like this:

Jekyll: why is a strand of your hair loose? It looks untidy.

lanyon: i keep it like that on purpose! It's a good conversation starter

Jekyll: what? No it's not.

Lanyon: we're conversing right now, are we not?

And after that interaction, Jekyll started to do the same thing.

📌When Utterson was younger, due to his chronic apathay towards everything, countless physicians failed to diagnose what was wrong with him. (He was AUTISTIC!!!) Answers usually bouncing between melancholia or just being a very well behaved child. His mother tried everything but still couldn't "cure" her son. This led to his mother becoming very depressed.

📌In his youth, Richard Enfield was occasionally sent to live at Gabriel's house as a sort of " emotional support child" for Gabe's mom. Since he was a lively, bubbling child, it brought utterson's mother much comfort caring for a "normal" child. But this also kinda fucked up Richard, because being used as a theraputic coping mechanism for most of his childhood led to him having an overly strong sense of justice, often throwing himself into needless danger for others.

📌lanyon wanted nothing more than to be a musician. But he also knew of his family's financial status would be unable to support this dream. Thankfully, after becoming a successful physician, he was able to play and compose all the music he wants! He also composed all the music that was played at his wedding.

📌Newcomen LOVES animals. He takes in abandoned animals on the street and nurses then to health before releasing them into the wild. He may have a stone cold expression and demeanor, but shove a box of kittens in his arms and he'll fawn over them for hours.

📌Enfield is popular with the ladies. He just doesn't know.

📌jekyll/hyde dont really have a healthy outlet to vent anger. It almost always is a form of violence. Whether it be hurting others or breaking objects or hurting himself, it's never pretty.

📌Utterson had a less than pretty reputation with many university professors. This is only because he would take the blame for anything Jekyll does. Consequently the university professors love Jekyll.

📌Pooles wife tragically died during childbirth, and the baby didn't make it either. He had refused to remarry and sees Jekyll as the son he never had.

I’m gonna pull a pro gamer move (expand on my jnh au sequel despite not even finishing the main au)

this takes place after jekyll’s death and uttersons suicide (oooo lore drop) and Richard and Newcomen are investigating the Jack the Ripper murders.

Also Newcomen gets a slight redesign

It definitely shocked Newcomen when he first learnt of enfield’s very strong connections to people. Speaking so casually of THE Henry Jekyll and Hastie Lanyon like they were old acquaintances

and well, they are. When the wine trio met in uni and enfield was in his teen years, Richard was brought along to any outings. He became the honorary little brother of the group. Even after Henry and Hastie’s falling out, Richard still remained close with the two.

I’m so Newcomen and enfield pilled its not even funny.
