The Island of Martha's Vineyard

As president and owner of Tate Builders, Inc., since 1983, Thomas E. “Tom” Tate has managed the construction of countless custom homes throughout Martha’s Vineyard. Thomas Tate has lived on the island since 1981. Martha’s Vineyard is not only the largest island in New England, but one of the region’s most frequently visited tourist destinations. With average temperatures peaking between June and August, the area is especially active during the summer. The island, often referred to simply as the Vineyard, is comprised of six unique towns. The “down island,” or eastern, towns of Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, and Vineyard Haven, also known as Tisbury, are the most densely populated. Edgartown was originally established in 1642 and continues to lure tourists and residents with its classic architecture and scenic South Beach. Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven, meanwhile, host the island’s two ferry ports. The Vineyard’s less populous “up island” to the west is more rural. However, the towns of Aquinnah, Chilmark, and West Tisbury still attract visitors. Aquinnah is best known for the historic Gay Head Lighthouse and the adjacent Gay Head Cliffs, while West Tisbury offers a variety of quaint charms, including the famous Field Gallery dancing lawn sculptures.
