27. What's the worst give they have ever received? How did they respond?
I almost went with the old classic "introverts hate parties but they especially hate surprise parties" but no, we can do better than that.
At some point Emily's parents bribed convinced Thomas to take Emily along on a vacation with their kids because maybe that will get her biological clock ticking or at least remind her there's a world outside this faerie tale of a career she had married herself to.
So for some birthday or other (aka the day people give you gifts and stare at you and interrogate you), Thomas and his wife gave Emily an all-expenses-paid winter cruise with them to the Caribbean.
Her entire winter recess. Trapped on a ship with her condescending brother, his wife, and those kids. Yaaaaaay.
(Did Edwardian era cruise ships even have libraries??!?! )
After some very profane possible responses battled each other inside her mouth, Emily finally managed a very bland "You shouldn't have." And of course that was when the kids ran up squealing and hugged her all at once, so she acknowledged defeat and squeaked out a smile.
